I'm planning to store my newly arrived 2013 SLK55 AMG for the winter. It will be 5 months while I'm in Arizona. The car will be covered in a heated underground garage at my condo. Are there any down sides to battery disconnection?

If you have access to electricity you could connect a battery conditioner like the Ctek. It will keep your battery in good condition without disconnecting it. Many in here have them connected all winter

What JonB said......think you are better off to use a microprocessor controlled charger. They float or maintain the battery without going through a charging cycle. You might take a look at the Battery Tender Plus.

Eddy has a great tutorial in the DIY section that shows how to attach the cable to the battery and route it out of the battery box. I routed mine to just behind the grill so its easy to connect/disconnect.

If you with a battery tender suggest you have someone to check every few weeks that it is still plugged in as someone might unplug it. In car or out of car suggest you use a battery tender.

Yes there is downside as a lot of electronics need to be reset. Also the automatic window lowering on door opening/closing won't work so you can't open and close the car doors without potential damage to weatherstripping. I think a float charger such as C-Tek is a wise investment and very convenient and pays for itself by extending battery life.
