2004 SLK 320 170.465 with 40K miles. Top hydraulics replaced last year, no problems since then. Sunday went for a drive, put top down and later up with no issues. On Monday drove 15 miles to doctor visit and afterwards started the car, pushed the red button to put the top down. Windows all retracted normally, top went down very slowly. Drove home and pushed the red button to put the top up, trunk opened and pump running but no top movement and had to manually help it along but it finally went up and locked in place.

Now the windows go down, pump is running, and nothing happens?
Fluid level normal, no leaks found
One year old Battery shows 12.64 V with engine off.
Started normally and now the BAS ESP light came on.
Windows retract, pump runs, top does nothing.

Suggestions please..

For the roof to work it has to pass several safety features.

Including, but not limited to:
Wheel speed sensor.
The blind in the boot has to be in place.
The door windows must lower.
The rear quarter windows must lower.
The roof catches in above the windscreen must unlatch.
The boot must open.
The battery must be in top condition (best having the engine running when playing).
The hydraulic fluid must be at the correct level.

As Len says, address the BAS/ESP first before looking at roof.

Charge battery (poor battery can lead to silly errors that are not real and roof uses a lot of power).
Only try roof with engine running for now.

The confusing thing for me is he says the Windows open and Pump is running but no Roof movement ???????????????

Normally, if a Wheel Speed Sensor is gone bad nothing happens except the Red Light in Roof Switch flashes ???????????????

SDS would be a good place to start to avoid a load of hassle, see what Fault Codes are stored in VR and ABS / ESP

@TinBoat229 @jbanks15 may have a recommended indy if you don't have a fav but we don't know where you are though as FLA is pretty big 😉

Lubricate your roof mechanism, and make sure your relief valve is fully closed. Normal movement of the boot lid, followed immediately by slow movement of the roof panel (and having to "help it along") are key indications that the pump is not developing the full amount of pressure. SDS is always good too, but somewhat lacking at troubleshooting low pressure.

I may have to take it to a local "euro cars" mechanic.

Make sure to ask if they use an SDS scanner, rather than a generic.
It digs deeper for codes.

Beat me to it. BAS/ESP seems to be magical.

The other one I like is the ECU reset:

1. Step 1 – With the doors closed insert the key into the ignition and turn the key to the ON position. ...
2. Step 2 – Depress the gas pedal and hold it to the floor.
3. Step 3 – Turn car off and release the gas pedal. ...
4. Step 4 – Wait 2 minutes before opening the driver's door

Sorry but I just love all the internet myths and rubbish that are spouted from many folks who don't have a clue (that's not directed at anyone in this thread btw) ...............
At the same time I despise them, they confuse guys like yourself who maybe don't realise how complex Mercedes cars were even back in the late 90's early 00's

All that resets is Throttle Butterfly Valve in the Motor ECU

@TinBoat229 ....

All Mercedes are rolling networks of Computers / ECU's / Modules / call them what you will

There are around 15 + ECU's on an R170, and only SDS can actually read all of them, including the Roof Module
