According to the manual, there's two types of air con:
  1. Climate Control
  2. Automatic Climate Control
I, obviously, have the former.. Can I upgrade/retrofit the latter in my car and if so, what parts (numbers) do I need? RHD, if that matters..

For start, this:
A1718300185 or A1718300685 , plus you can add sunlight sensor on the dashboard, there is a thread somewhere on this forum about retrofitting, was thinking about it myself, but aircon panel alone costs £500... so I decided to spent that money on nicer wheels and tyres

I can't remember the part number but I got mine from Partshark. They have loads of parts so worth a search! Confusion is that it can be called thermotronic, climatronic, digital A/C etc etc. Someone out there knows the right name and number I'm sure.

For FL R171 the operating unit has partnr A1718301985.
For the sunsensor you need the sensor and a different centre rosette. Rosette partnr is A1718310659 if you have PTS. Think the sensor is integrated. If no PTS partnr is A1718310559.
Pollution sensor is A2118300472 and the bracket for it is A1718300214.

Installing motorized flaps is a complete dash out job and maybe even a new housing. Not sure of that last. I don't know if you want to go that route....
Anyway, here is an excellent thread to read before you start Climatronic Retrofit... (Digital Climate Control)
For pre-FL but except for some partnrs the same for FL.

Somewhere in all those posts, I got this:

• A171 830 01 85 (first version, superseded by next number)
• A171 830 06 85 (current version with silver buttons)
• A171 830 16 85 (current version with black buttons for cars with VIN from F177230)
• A171 830 19 85 (black buttons, US market)

I hear you,but as said ....1985 pops up when I fill in my VIN that has option 581 (automatic climate control) and my car is definitely European. From my datacard:
331B INSTRUMENT CLUSTER/HU LANGUAGE - DUTCH
201B OWNERS MANUAL AND SERVICE RECORD - DUTCH
5XXL EUROPE
581 AUTOMATIC CLIMATE CONTROL

That's about as European as you can get............................. 😁

From EPC:
598252

.....1685 shows up in EPC with code 580 btw. 580 being what you now have, not AAC.

From EPC with your VIN:

598253

Uhmm....think so. .....1685 is the one you now have according EPC. Don't think you need a 2nd one?
Here's one for sale. Isn't that the one that is now in your car?

.....1985 is the one I have in my car,one for sale her,but price is ouch...............!!

That's the one you want isn't it?

Oh, doh! After a lot of Google Images googling, I think I understand what they ment by "current version"! It's the one I have now, the non-digital one!

So, if I now understand this correctly:

• A171 830 01 85 - Termatronic (first version, superseded by next number)
• A171 830 06 85 - Termatronic (with silver buttons)
• A171 830 16 85 - Climatronic (with black buttons for cars with VIN from F177230)
• A171 830 19 85 - Termatronic (with black buttons)

Close but no cigar.....................😁

Afaik,
the first 2 ....0185 and ...0685 are the pre-FL ones. First is for early pre-FL AC button lit when AC is off and the 2nd for later,AC button lit when AC is on.
Both called Thermotronic or Climatronic. Both terms are used.
....1684 is the non-digital FL one with black buttons. Called Thermatic.......
....1985 is the digital FL one Called Thermotronic or Climatronic.

I know, know, MB parts department can make your head spin.....
Above all to the best of my knowledge.
But I am sure that ...1985 is the right one. Pretty sure that is in my car and I still had a functioning automatic climate control this afternoon.

What's the part numbers for those .. "not so easy to change" parts? @Sneaky Pete , can you check for me please?

I'll check what they cost and I'll decide then if I want to do it or not. Work wise, I have several winter months where I have nothing to do anyway :). I'm sure it could need a good clean behind there anyway :D :D.

The two main addition components I advocate are the Pollution/Humidity sensor and the Sun sensor. Here are the part numbers:

Humidity:
Sensor 211 830 09 72
Mounting bracket 171 830 02 14 (two M6 nuts required to secure)

Sun:
Sensor 171 830 00 72
Bracket 171 831 05 59
Bracket if car has Parktronic 171 831 06 59

Did a bit of reading in WIS and it seems the difference between AAC (option 580) and C-AAC (option 581) for that part is 1 motor and a different housing for the central nozzle. Plus another cable and an extra lever. See pic.

598304

The extra motor (M2/210 may be part of the housing. Could not find a partnr in EPC so I guess it is but I am not sure.
I have added the instructions for remove and install and it seems that you have to synchronize the actuator motors after install with DAS/STAR.
All and all a nice job for winter...... 😁
Don't know if anyone had done this before, you may be entering uncharted territory. :);)
Anyway, good luck and I will be watching this thread with interest should you go ahead with it.

Now that I got the A/C working correctly (see other thread), I can come back to this and see what parts for the full retrofit I need and what they cost.. Gives me some heads-up when it's time to order later in the fall (which is closer than I'd like to admit :) ).

Looking at that picture and a similar one at the russian site, I got this:
  • A171 830 00 60 - Heater Housing (for 580)
  • A171 830 01 60 - Heater Housing (for 580)
  • A171 830 03 62 - Heater Housing (for 581) ???
  • A171 830 04 62 - Heater Housing (for 581) ???
  • A171 830 06 62 - Heater Housing (not for 580/581)
  • A171 830 07 62 - Heater Housing (not for 580/581)

  • A171 827 01 04 - Electric cable (for 580)
  • A171 827 02 04 - Electric cable (for 581) <---

  • A171 830 02 03 - TS Housing (not for 581)
  • A171 830 03 03 - TS Housing (for 581) <---

  • A171 830 04 03 - Housing (not for 580/581)
  • A171 830 05 03 - Housing (for 580/581) ???
  • A171 830 06 03 - Housing (not for 580/581)
  • A171 830 07 03 - Housing (for 580/581) ???

  • A203 820 16 42 - Fresh air flaps positioning motor <---
  • A171 830 01 33 - Operating Lever <---
So the ones marked "<---" are self explanatory. There's no other option than those, they're clearly for option 581.
However, some marked "???" seems to be the same thing, but different part numbers. The URL mentioned doesn't say more than that, that they're for option 581..

I've included the option 580 part numbers just for completeness.

Funny though, I got quite a few quotes on the control module... Worst was £875!! I actually laughed out very load!! :D :D.
But one was £168, which is perfectly fine. Hopefully they through in the rest of the parts I must have (now - the sensors) for a very small sum.

Ooooookay then!! I just had to call him, because apparently he's confused..

He's claiming, VERY vehemently !!, that ALL (!!) cars in the UK have silver buttons. Even the post face lift ones. I referenced your snapshot above @Sneaky Pete telling him that you (didn't mention you by name though) looked up my WIN and everything and it say "19 85", not "06 85".. I'm getting a bit "annoyed" now..
