So, been thinking about getting a new scanner. last one I had was Jaguar specific .. so wanted a multi marque one.
after reading and searching plenty of people like this Autel one, so I tried to see what it might do or my two Mercedes. A 2002 SLK 230 and 2003 CLK 320
Anyway I found this download showing exactly what it will, and will not do, so I thought I'd share it with everyone ...
here's the link..

I can't answer that sorry. I thought that pre 2001 cars had a 38 socket located in the engine compartment, inside a box on the lhs for UK vehicles but I might be wrong.
My SLK 230 has a standard socket under the steering wheel

Found this thread .. may help you

Some Mercedes still had an obd port under steering but also 38 pin under bonnet

If yours has not one under bonnet then fine .

It was a time period when odb II was crossing over about the 2000 period

Hi David Did you actually buy it and try it? I have been on this search for a long time and been in touch with Autel who told me that they did not have a scanner for the R170 with 38 pin socket. I did buy one from a company called Vident an iLink400 that was supposed to work, Im not convinced it does the full range yet because Ive sent it back to check it out. Nice unit but has a boot up issue. I also bought the adaptor cable from 38 pin to OBD2 Keep me posted if you dont mind. Thanks

Hi bryn,

Like I said in my op, My SLK is a 2002 so has a 16 pin socket so is OBD 11 compatible. I am not sure if it will fully work with Pre 2001 car with 38 pin... Got a feeling a number of functions are missing, something to do with earlier OBD system...
I'm ordering this weekend so will update...
Cheers

Seems I did not get the link correct..
if you look at this link
https://pro.auteltech.com/measurecar-1-1.html?m=4
you will need to
a) select Maxidiag Elite MD802
b) find Benz All Systems
c) click the download link.

From what I can read this will do for both 16 and 38 pin SLK 170.s - but not all systems can be checked. So please read the pdf file with care...

Thanks, this is the information I was getting from Autel. and you could be right when you say some functions will be missing. I heard from Vident today and they are sending me a replacement scanner, so I will also keep you posted. You should be OK with OBD2 at that age car

So, I got it - sadly it only worked on 4 systems, not the whole vehicle, so it went back..

in replacement I bought the iCarsoft MBV1 - the new replacement for the iCarsoft 980...

This stunningly good - does all I will ever want - including the roof mech..

here's the link to the one I bought ..

Just a note: only for MB.
