First let me say hello, and that I am hoping to find a new community to share my auto enthusiasm with. I bought my SLK about a year ago now I guess, originally for my wife but then she decided that she didn't like it and I decided that I did so we agreed to keep it for me, I have liked it more and more ever since and now it is time to do some work to it to make it the replacement vehicle for my heavily modified Legend, here's what I have in mind I am pulling most of this from a post on MBWORLD so if you follow both sorry for the duplication. More exposure equals more knowledge and assistance

I have fallen in love with the idea of the poor mans Supercar so I have decided to do the following.

Engine will be an E55 AMG (later to be supercharged) (will ship Monday)
Trans will be a 6 speed from the 2003 3.2 Crossfire. (in transit)
Brake upgrade will be SL500 Brembo brakes (in transit)
330mm slotted rotors (I need suggestions on a brand and seller likely Brembo)

I am yet to decide on coilovers but if I can save and wait I will go D2's had em and loved em.

Yes this is quite the lofty build but very similar builds have been done by a select few and I am starting to reach out to people with this specialized expertise so if you are reading it and you are that person say hello and if you know someone who could be this person do some name dropping such as Lantana and Rudy. I have also spent a lot of time reading and joining the Crossfire forum since there is a lot of swap knowledge there. Wish me luck I have read about the difficulty of similar builds in the Crossfires platform and hear the SLK pre 2002 is going to be a bit more difficult but that's a step better than what they said about a twin turbo Acura Legend and i pulled that off

Morning and welcome ...

Interesting idea, but you might find getting a R171 55 ticks most of those boxes (except the 6 speed, but thats a different debate)

Plus you get bigger brakes and all you'd need to do then is supercharge it .....

V8 M113 engine, ECU already in place, exhaust, mounts, etc etc etc

God what a huge waste of money and time this project will be. Just trade that buggy in on a late model 55.

BTW, the 55 has upgraded third member, transmission, brakes, shocks, springs, and more other stuff than you can shake a stick at!

that may be your opinion but some of us enjoy modding cars, not just going out and buying a ready made one
go for it mate (and post pics) and once it is finished I am sure you will enjoy it a lot more knowing you have built it

Hi Telion and welcome to the forum 😊

I'm sure you'll find lots if useful info on here, as we have.

I think what you're planning to do is just fab. I'll be watching your transformation with admiration.

I really respect someone who just does it 👍

Perhaps overstated, but it will take a huge investment in time and money...but if that's what you want to do, go for it.

On the practical side - have you looked at the challenge of mating the 6spd to the 5.5? And I would be concerned about the amount of torque (primarily torque) and HP trying to go through it...

Best of luck

BTW, a 6-spd from a Crossfire? That transmission doesn't have a chance in Hell of handling the torque of a big V8 especially one with a supercharger. Then there is the problem of mating it to the engine plus figuring how to put a clutch on an engine not designed for one.

As much as many people seem to hate automatics, an automatic is absolutely the best way to manage a lot of torque. Also an auto can shift faster than most humans can, and really what's so great about shifting? After many years of owning only manuals and after buying a BMW with a DCT and the Merc with the 7-G, I can say shifting is a waste of time.

I assume this engine will be going in a 170? This car wasn't know for stellar handling, and with the heavy weight of the V8 making it nose heavy, it'll be even worse. Finally, Mercedes had problems shoehorning the V8 in the 171, I'd hate to think of the problems getting it into a 170.

im here to see the progress. i've seen guys on MBworld do it, and crossfire guys as well. it can be done, but as it's already been stated, it's a huge investment of time and money. if i had the finances, i would do it too. even just putting an m113 from an s550 or s500 would be enough for me. a car as small as the r170, having 350hp or so would be awesome. please keep us posted with updates and pictures!!!!

I lucked out and found these on KSL 18x7.5 Zinick Z15's. I wanted to wait till I was ready for this part of the build but I could not pass them up for the price. 250.00 and they are normally 1500.00 this build has a lot of good luck supporting it so far :) I was hoping for a wider rear wheel but these were too nice to pass up for the price. I can always run drag slicks in the rear if I track it.

PS thank you for the support, costructive criticsm, and concern. I am actually just glad to see that people posted there is no fun in sharing a build if no one is interested. Yes I love the build process and the challenge that comes with it. Some people enjoy gambling I enjoy this and have a little bit better odds of success. Please elaborate on the concern of the trans holding the torque what part has been known to fail under heavy torque? As for the expense it comes with the build of this type but the uniqueness of the outcome is worth the journey for me and there is so much I teresr for me in the thought of building an unexpected 11 second car that can drop its top at the press of a key fob :)

I find this interesting and am glad someone is taking on the challenge and will also keep slkworld updated on the progress. A project like that will surely have some challenges, but you will be giving others insightful information while also gaining some from the knowledgeable members here. I have often wondered what the V8 would be like mated to a 6 speed manual in the r171. This at least will give me some idea :)

I have to second the guy about the 6 speed not being up to the power of that engine. I'm pretty sure that it can't take much more than a stock 3.2 (218 hp) V6. The 6 speed wasn't offered in the SRT 6 Version of the Crossfire as it couldn't handle the power of a supercharged V6. So putting it behind the V8, it will work, the question is for how long. Good luck and post lots of pictures of the build.

Okay thwre have been many concerns about the ability of the NG370 transmission but no one saying why other than it has not been rated to hold more than285 whp or so. So I did a great deal of reading and even though I am yet to find where someone has ruined one from putting down too much power I have read a multitude of issues with ot such as popping out of gear and grinding to get into 2nd from 1st. For now I will sleep in the bed I have made as I am pretty sure the trans has been shipped. I will know for sure tomorrow. Till then if babied I am sure it will be fine till I supercharge it but babying is not what this build will be for so I am researching alternatives at this time. Its not that I didn't believe the doubters but I need substance annd evidence vs what people think basex on theory or untested information.

People put Chevy V8s in Miatas. One has to ask why? A sane person would reasonably figure out that a Chevy V8 belongs in a Chevy!

Life is short. Any project should only be undertaken when it has been carefully thought out and the benefits far outweigh the costs. This sounds like a loser from the start.
