Hello, fellow European SLK friends,

we will be going to Germany next month with another couple, on their trip to pick up their new Porsche Macan via the European delivery program.
we will be traveling around for a few days, so wanted to ask for nice driving roads (besides -The autobahn) and other must recommendations south of Frankfurt.
will travel as far south as Garmisch-partenkirchen

thanks and have a nice weekend

Can’t help you myself but hoping people respond and you have lots of fun.
Garmisch-Partenkirchen is interesting and very scenic (IIRC Germany’s highest peak is there). They had the 1936 winter Olympics there and a lot of the structures are still standing.

As you are presumably in Stuttgart to collect the car there is a Porsche factory tour, Porsche museum, Mercedes Museum - all very much worth a visit. My wife is not a petrol head and she thoroughly enjoyed all three.

If you can make it to the black forest it is beautiful and of course there is also the Nurburgring & the opportunity to go as fast as you dare on the autobahns (where permitted as a lot of it is restricted).

Lots more to see and do in Germany - check the tourist guides.

As above plus the 2 technik museums, all types of technology including some amazing cars, planes and even a Russian space shuttle! If you want a bit of comedy take a close look at the cockpit of the Russian copy of Concorde, the electrics are very familiar to anyone who has owned a 1950's type car!

Thanks for the recommendation, I will definitely be booking a one night stay in one of Freiburg’s Gasthaus’s.

This definitely sounds interesting, will add to my list of alternatives if we have extra time, as Sinsheim is not far from Stuttgart. :)
Thanks
There are some beautiful roads in the south of Germany:
  • Deutsche alleenstrasse (German Avenue Road)
  • Romantische Strasse (German Romantic Road) passing by the beautiful village of Rothenburg a d T.
And don't miss the castle Neuschwanstein near Fussen close to the Austrian border.
Please don't forget to try the local beer. Yummie
Also in that area, is the place I want to go to most. The Zeppelin Museum at Friedrichshafen. - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zeppelin_Museum_Friedrichshafen On the North side of the Bodensee (Lake Constance). Which is billed as Germany's Riviera. So much to do. So little time!!!!

Would like to thank all those that gave us recommendations on must-drive roads. we drove 1600 miles during our two weeks vacation. absolutely breathtaking views when you take the back roads.
we only used the Autobahn when we needed to get somewhere faster :)
