Starting a road trip thread to keep you guys upto date :tu:
@Trev5 @Rorywquin @JudgeMing I am sure will add too.

I think I am first on the road. After an emergency appointment to lose a tooth this morning (great timing), we have driven the 3 hours to Maidstone for an overnight stay before our short drive to the ferry tomorrow. Medium sized case for clothes and sports bag for shoes and toiletries fits a treat. Plenty of room? No, but enough. Much more than touring on bike, I remind the other half

Uneventful drive on the busy M4 and M25, highlight was great weather so roof was down all the way.

More interesting reports to follow, hopefully

Once We've dropped the dog off for Her "Holly Day", We will be following in Your tracks around the M25 & down the M20 to the Channel Tunnel for a lunch time crossing to France and looking very Top Down weather here with blue sky's R)

I will be fitting in two carry on suite cases, cool bag & a bottle of Oz Merlot, while still being able to put the boot divide in place >:D

Absolutely Trev, doesn't matter what you take but the boot divide MUST close

Great weather today, roof down all the way to Laon for an overnight stay. Topped out at 30c, yes in France that was .

DFDS lunchtime ferry was deserted, great but very weird. Not much traffic on the peage :tu:

Time for a cool beer.

Have a good safe trip from up north tomorrow Rory.

I may be the last one to leave, sunday morning, but I 'll bet I'll be the quickest there!
An estimated 600 km in 6 hours (google maps). I think I can do better if traffic cooperates just a little and make it in time for the evening dinner to see the others.

No passenger on this run, so if someone feels (s)he needs a ride ...
No passenger also means more than enough storage available, a luxury!

See ya there!

AMG - Euro Road Trip 2017 (Day 1)

We had a good ~250mile drive to just north of Reims in France & turned in a respectable 30.8mpg

Though un-like Dave on the ferry, the Euro Tunnel train was full and quite a few people heading down to Le-Mans, for this weekends 24 hour race.

Funny story from the train: The lady loading our carriage was going down the carriage telling drivers to apply hand break & leave sunroof/window open - so said the window bit to us, before clocking that We had the roof down - Said We'd be ok...!!!

Once across the channel, made good 125km/hour top down progress with temps up to 30's, so appreciated a swim in our hotels pool, followed by a beer by the lake side - Who's round is it...?

Few pictures from today:

Long day driving today from Laon France to Lake Constance on the Southern Germany border.

Stuck to the peage in France down via Strasbourg and Freiburg.

Great weather 30c to 32c most of the day. Had the roof up for a bit as too much sun :surprise:

Almost liked paying the peage just for accelerating away each time >:D

Amazing how quick cars travel in Germany, really got to keep an eye on your mirror when in the fast lane, even if a dual carriageway.

Very happy to reach our hotel, German White Beer hits the spot

Still waiting to here from Rory and Trev :surprise:

Lazy day around Lake Constance today. Decided to do the short trip to Meersburg.

It's such a busy popular part of Germany, great deal of traffic. Fine for us today, not if you were on a long trip. Perfect top down cruising weather 27c.

Filled up with Shell Racing 100 >:D, shame about traffic and 80kph max speed :td:

Some lovely cars around, handful of SLKs not that many. More 911s. Had a little play with a German Couple in a very nice C43 Convertible, ended with much laughter and a thumbs up

Beautiful part of the world, recommended, but plenty of time required.

Travel up to Stuttgart tomorrow to meet up with Trev and Rory.

AMG - Euro Road Trip 2017 (Day 2)

Day two of our Road Trip dawned another hot & sunny day and breakfast by the pool was a real treat:

After repacking our suite cases into the boot, making sure there was space for 1 x SLK Folding Roof:

We where off for our drive to Germany - Now there are cheaper routes to take, but choose to use French toll route & We have a "Sanef Tolling Tag" - So every "Peage" toll point brings a smile.
So You slow down to 30kmh, little tag in the car bleeps, barrier goes up and You can guess what happens next...!!

During a lunch stop in the shade of the trees:

I was taking the mick via WhatsApp of @davest4s putting His roof up to get some rest-bite from the 33'c sun -- Well bad Karma had it revenge....
....as the afternoon drive progressed, spots of rain appeared on the windscreen - Now We've driven through showers before and I could see clearer sky's on the horizon, so how bad could it be?

...but this French shower had Mega Pay-Load rain drops - Yepp, it was bad: :surprise:

> And a YouTube proof to show how bad it was:
https://youtu.be/TYB7ds89ONY

Lucky it was only short lived & crossed into Germany - had a quick burst on 9km on Autobahn - Touch 120 (mph, not km/hour that is..!!)

Before climbing into the hills of the Black Forest - Though with the dark clouds catching us up & the sound of thunder, it was a quick photo stop & press on:

Then after 298miles @ 30.7mpg, made it to our hotel in Spa town of "Bald Wildbad"

Last couple of days have been superb.

Yesterday we did the Porsche Museum in the morning. They put on a freebie for us all because the Le Mans was on

In the afternoon, the guys did the Mercedes Museum, whilst we did Ludwigsburg Palace as we did it a couple of years ago. Anyway, I said it would be a nice change for Marisa.

Yep, there was a great historic car show there .

Some pictures of a 5.4 V8 Kompressor which is cooler than an SLK even :surprise:

Today we all did the Porsche Factory this morning, it was superb. We had a great very knowledgeable guide. No photos allowed sorry.

This afternoon we did the AMG Factory, also superb. Although, not quite as good as the Porsche visit. Also no photos allowed, but was great to see the hyper car prototype, sorry I can't tell you about it.

Trev had a group photo taken, which I am sure he'll post.

It has been a real pleasure to spend time with the guys, Rory, Bea, Trev, Carole and Roland.

To which I may add, that parking is an rare art at AMG. It was a quiet day so some could park in the load/unload zone. Huh? on a quiet day? The local grocery market is walkable distance and has a parking lot for about two hours. Must be possible, right?

The tour guide offered to try to get to speak to the person who created my engine, but I declined. I wouldn't know what to say; congrats I'm the owner of the car that has your 3739th engine in it?

The M152 engine appeared to be fallen into some kind of grey area between MB and AMG on what to do with the SLK top model at that time. Must not eat into turbo charged cars, must have more umph than the previous models and the 350 of that time and work with the general 'call' for less consumption. Something not too many AMG owners find a compelling argument for selecting a big V8 car. And so the M152 with cylinder deactivation was born: no tubro, lower consumption. But it proved a mistake and so it was decided not to carry it forward to any other car.

Didn't get a clear answer if the M157 of M156 would physically fit into the R172. But they have a special department for clients with a bucket list and money to spare. There was a brand new SL taken apart to be repainted and releathered. It was explained that the combination of options would have been too much for the standard production lines at Sindelfingen.

Maybe I can use this department to get them to look into the matter. For sure MB won't like it, but a one off ...

It was a very hot day and a great organisation by Dave, tonight the last dinner and tomorrow we'll each go our separate ways again. Good to put some faces with regular posters!

All went our separate ways this morning :frown:

Rory and Bea to Lake Constance. Trev and Carole to Switzerland and Roland back to Netherlands.

Was a great weekend, shame it's over.

We have just stopped at Troyes in France for a couple of nights, we drove through and stopped off in the very pretty Alsace Region. Some Autobahns, too busy but had a play with a friendly young chap in a R8. 135mph with the roof down was welcome with 36.5c temp phew.

A last news flash from the Hotel newspapers; (not exactly The Times, more like the Hickville telegraph).

The German TÜV (the organisation that does the MOT's a.o.) has determined in their 2017 report that the SLK (R172) is the winner in the 4-5 year old passenger cars category with the least reported problems. The predecessor R171 is also right up there (not the number one) in the older categories.

For the R172 the brakelines are the only known issue and for the R171 the steering axis, shocks and springs are the ones to watch out for. There are no known issues with oil losses according to the ADAC but they note that these are cars are used for summerrides mostly which may explain the small number of reported issues.

Empty batteries are the culprit for 2007-2010 series and broken starter engines for the 2006-2007 cars.

Welcome break from driving today in the beautiful historical town of Troyes.

Our hotel was built in the 1500s but has an underground car park with music.
Where else do you ever find that? Guys across the pond? >:D

Multi national bug bumper

I did a scientific experiment on the Autobahn, the faster your go the more mess bugs make on your windscreen
