I managed to attend the recent class in Austin, TX at Circuit of the Americas.
While expensive, I had a blast and would like to think I learned a lot too.
Got to drive pretty much all the AMG cars, no SUV/crossover stuff.

Link should be my run in an AMG GT-R. After 2/3 of a day going around the track as either driver or passenger, I thought I was getting the hang of which way turns went, which needed lots of braking, etc. Put me in the big bad car and I thought, just maybe I’m using 50% of it, just maybe. Telemetry comes back, nope I’m doing jack, lol. Then to add insult, you do a ride along with a professional driver, who demonstrates just how slow you really were.

Well worth the money, especially if you’re buying a new AMG, don’t let the free class time go to waste.

Nope, no passing allowed.
The instructor was the lead car.
Attempt to maintain 3-4 car lengths, if someone dropped farther back, they slowed the whole group so you could catch up.

That is the main reason I cancelled my day. I found out that several performsnce driving schools do classes at the track where you can drive things like Vettes, AMGs, and Porsches. Other classes allow you to drive your own car. Following an indtructor in a nose to tail group going slower than I would like isnt worth it, unless I buy a brand new AMG and the class is free. I was super excited originally but ultimately cancelled my day about 2 months beforehand out of a lack of desire to potentially have my "at speed" laps ruined by a slower driver holding up the whole group.

Ah, that brings back pleasant memories. Probably the biggest thrill of my life this side of jumping into a vat of cold Roosevelt dimes. When I went, it was pouring down rain almost all day, with the hardest rain during my recorded laps, so I only hit 113 tops vs. your 132. The car ahead disappeared into a rooster tail, worried about coming up on him or a hidden curve in the fog. Story of my life. Great job! Highly recommended to all even if you have to pay.

Everyone who owns a performance car should do a class like this, now that you have had a taste, look into taking a HPDE with someone like the LSRPCA https://lsrpca.com/drivers-education/ or HCRPCA https://www.hcrpca.org/track-de/ or The Driver Edge https://www.thedriversedge.net/. All three are Texas groups and you can learn so much more. With these groups you have an instructor in your car and you drive at the speed you can handle and what your instructor believes you can handle. I was an instructor for the groups and I believe it is worth it at least once. These cars are capable of so much more than most people know.

Guessing I had about 15-20k miles on my Honda S2000 on the track over a 8.5 year period, instructing at Texas World Speedway (closed), MSR Houston, Motorsport Ranch (Cresson) and Harris Hill Raceway. These classes will teach you about breaking and what your car is really capable off, where you should be looking ahead, how you should be seated, the technical parts of a turn and how they are done differently and there will be classroom sessions to talk about what your doing and why and more.

The biggest problem with the “follow the leader” is that you really don’t know if you are doing it correctly and you are not getting feed back from someone who see just what your doing. Plus you can only go as fast or push your as hard as the car in front of you.

Here is a picture of my S2000 and my trailer, headed out to Vegas for a track day and one with the hardtop on it.

Yeah, a friend and neighbor with a 2003 S2000 race car put me on to those groups. Good stuff. Have yet to partake, though.

Best single classroom tip: look into the turn where you're about to go, not ahead. I use that every day in normal driving. Makes a yuge difference. In my COTA video you can see me doing that. Mostly saw rain, though. :(
