Hi Memx

I would say if the car is not a SLK55 than its not a AMG , You may have AMG trim inside or body kit as a factory fit , could do with some more pictures outside & in . or post your VIN number & the magic will happen .

Cheers

Someone ..... perhaps dealers or indy dealers have been slapping 'AMG' onto the boot lids of just about anything rollling.

There was a SLK 350 'AMG' for sale recently.

It had an AMG body kit and wheels but that doesn't make it an AMG any more than slapping 'Ferrari' on the boot of mine would make it an Italian Stallion!

Hi and welcome to this great forum.

I would ditto what other folks have said here. I think it's similar to BMW cars having 'M' badges all over them when they are not M cars but maybe have some 'sporty bits' on them.

As far as I know, to be a true AMG your car would need to have a 5.5 litre AMG engine plus all the AMG 'bells and whistles' (gearbox/suspension etc etc).

However, just enjoy it whatever it's specification is as you have a great car there!

Guys, there were AMG versions of the R170 noteably the SLK32 AMG Kompressor, which I understand is actualy quicker than an SLK55 AMG.

So it doesn't have to be a 55 to be an AMG.

It was also possible to buy 'official' AMG versions of 'lesser' R171's when we bought ours. Cookiecrew for example has a 350 with the AMG style body kit. Granted, there are other significant differences in a 55 that aren't simply replicated by fitting a body kit, even if that was done at the factory. The V8 engine being one of them.

To the OP, your car could have an official AMG kit, but the image you posted is too dark for me to see if an AMG body kit fitted or not. If it is 'official' then I guess the AMG badges may have been added by the factory, in which case you could quite reasonably leave them on in my view. On the other hand, if they have been added by a former owner, then the badges could be seen as advertising a "sheep in wolf's clothing". That said, it's your sheep, dress it how you wish.

I didn't think the factory ever added an AMG boot/trunk emblem to SLKs that just had the factory fitted AMG bodykits and wheels.

Also pretty sure the stock R170 32 AMG wasn't quicker than the R171 55 AMG that replaced it - but it's easier to bump the power with a forced induction engine.

Fair enough, didn't know whether 'non AMGs' with body kit got the badge or not. Just saying if it's OEM, OK to leave it on. If not, questionable to leave it on.

I just looked on Wiki and that shows the 32 AMG 0-100 as 5.2s and the 55 AMG as 4.9s, with the R172 version at 4.6s. So, looks like I was wrong there. :(

I'll have to speak with the person :usa: what led me astray!! :biglaugh:

If it has 3 numbers, not an AMG. SLK32, SLK55. Nothing else is an AMG. It may have a sport package that will claim association to the AMG name, but only the SLK32 and SLK55 are built by AMG.

Just yesterday I stopped by Fletcher Jones Motor Car in Fremont. I was close by and I just wanted to see what they had on the lot. BTW, not a single SLK of ANY generation, new or used, for sale.

But, as I was leaving and got up the next red light, in front of me was a beautiful R171, fairly current, maybe a 2009-2010, driven by a gentleman about my age I would say, dressed very dapper in suit and tie. The car was CLEARLY badged...........SLK350 of the left and ///AMG on the right sides of the boot.

I had to make a U-turn at the signal so I didn't even get a chance to notice if it had the ///AMG body kit. I have a feeling that the driver was from the Dealership and probably an employee. It seems this "Badging Foolery" with ///AMG has now perpetrated our US dealerships as well.

The R171 SLK 55 manufacturers numbers are 0-60 in 4.9 but the motoring press tested it a variety of different times and consistently got 4.3 seconds.

Whichever way it's flippin' quick. :burnout:

The SLK32 has to be the ultimate wolf in sheep's clothing though. V6 not an 8 and as near as damnit as much horsepower as a 55. The only thing that lets it down on the acceleration is the torque offered by an 8 cylinder lump.

By now everyone knows the old R170 shape and very few people expect the performance that it punches out expecting the 320 or 230 figures.

Then it's not an 'official' AMG, just a sport package MB.

Fair enough, I'm not arguing that it is an AMG built car, only that it's Mercedes that are applying the AMG brand to the sports option. This isn't the same as a car being chav'd up in a back street chop shop to look like something it's not.

In the end it all comes on top when the lights go green. That said a 350 will kick some butts too, AMG or not.

I have seen r171 AMG get 4.3-4.4 stock.
