Hi yall,
I'm new here and have been lurking around since I got my new SLK350 in October, I think I've contracted a case of AMG envy since I went to the MB dealer and drove an SLK55 today, lukily they did not have one in the colors I want, but I've got a sheet of paper with one speced out that they will have trucked over, if I agree. Now don't get me wrong I absolutely love my 350 and pamper it better than any woman, as a matter of fact It's as if I'm possesed by some kind of SLK illness that is developing into an obsesssion (Memorial weekend was spent polishing her with Zaino)to have the best SLK there is and hince my delima. Would I be out of my mind to trade in an 8 month old 350 for a 55? Is there a cure or do I just succumb to my carnal desire to have the beastly 55?

Is there any cure for AMG lust? or once contracted do you just succumb to the inevitable?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Sorry mate,

If you got the bug its curtains.

Might as well sign the forms now and not stress yourself further because it's inevitable

:DI had "AMG envy", but I've since gotten over it. Seriously, my wife and I have a nice 2006 350 which we love. The more I was on this forum, the more I wanted a SLK 55. I've since gotten one, used 2005. It's everything I thought it would be. I was even out yesterday washing it between rain showers after a Saturday trip to Roanoke, VA. It's everything a SLK should be, but for some the SLK 280 or 350 is as much car as they need. My wife is well suited to the SLK 350 and myself, I'm a SLK 55 guy. Good luck.

There is no cure to change your mind in purchasing the SLK55, If you are financially capable and that you love the 55 AMG then just do it. You only live once, so treat yourself to something nothing the less.

Yes, many of us know the feeling. There is a cure, even if it is expensive. If you can afford it, just do it. The AMG should retain it's value over time and will probably become a collector's car in 20 years or so. The 350?, well maybe, but probably not. I'm planning to keep my SLK 55 in perfect shape forever. I drive it just about everyday and it has about 10400 miles on it in 20months time. I'm 54 years old. I'll be buying a C63 AMG in a year or so. Between the two AMGs I expect to get 25-30 more years of luxury, high-performance driving out of them. I've always kept my cars for 10-15 years and have steadily traded up into nicer cars. About the only car I would consider selling my 55 for would be a SL AMG model, when I retire and want to do more, longer road trips.

I am told they have drugs to help but they only work if you have never driven the 55 AMG. After a drive or even a ride, drugs will not work. Confinement in an institution is the only solution short of owning one. :rb:rbRemember one thing, you must maintain physical conditioning if you get a 55 otherwise you will stroke out when you push the long pedal too hard...:rb:rb

BTW, welcome to the group, enjoy the fun, info and advice here.

PS. Order a 2008 SLK 55 AMG Storm Red and I will be movin in wid you....;);)

Well, as other members said, just do it if you can affort it. I share the exact same feeling. I just bought my 55 not long ago, and before I bought it, I was going after for the 350 until I found this really good deal 55. So I will say keep the 350 for now until you find a good deal on 55. The 2008 is coming out in August, and you will have a better chance on finding a 2007 55 with a good deal that you might not even expected~! Good luck.

When the R171 was announced, I had a 10 month old, Obsidian black R170 - I thought the value of that would fall fairly quickly with the new model out, so I ordered a new 350. At the time (June 2004) it was said that the 55AMG would not be out for another year, hence the 350. I picked it up from the factory, and the more I'm the custodian of it, the more I want to keep it forever. I don't do that many miles in it, never in the wet or salt - I've got other cars, bikes & vans for that type of thing. It's everything I want in a car - in thirty years time, I'll either be pushing up daiseys or not driving, so I'll keep it forever. OK, the AMG is quicker & faster, but I very rarely drive my 350 to the limit anyway. I'm not at all envious of AMG owners, or people who are perceived to have better cars than mine, nor do I gloat over people who have cars which might be perceived to be lower than mine. I love it for what it is, am ecstatic to own it and drive it, and am generally, all round, a happy bunny - BTW, if you hadn't noticed it's a greenish shade of green, and I would not swap it for anything (who mentioned a twin supercharged 6.3 :):) ).

This aint an either or guys.. no comparisons or playoffs required. different people like to associate with things differently I'm an AMG fanboy, if thats the right word. I just love what I think(maybe correctly or uncorrectly) what it is trying to be. It's like someone loving a harley because it's a classic and a image and me loving sportsbikes because I love the sporty rev high blitz of it all. no need to compare why I like one and not the other as wolly said it makes you super happy which any slk will. Coming back to it I wouldn't buy any other non-black MB in the market. So I'm also an SLK fanboy.

first off Dogger, welcome!

the 350's a lot of car. are you driving her to her limits? if you are and you're not satisfied, it might be time to consider a move to the 55. other options certainly include modifying your 350 to 55 performance levels...

:tu:EXCELLENT statement Wooly. I've seen some gloating (comments made) over the past year. Does "wannabe" sound familiar. Almost, if not 100% on the other forums. I was never envious of the owners, but the SLK 55 itself. If it was SLK 55 or nothing, we wouldn't have considered keeping the SLK 350. I also drive a Mazda6, VW NewBeetle and a Toyota truck, but the SLKs are my favorites.

Greed is good, lust is bad.

I could have bought the 350, but because I've never been 100% satisfied with any car I've had, I have this insatiable appetite for power and control. The 55 is so powerful, so scary, so beautiful, that I always want to drive it. But when I'm behind the wheel and driving down the highway with other people gawking and my right foot twitching... I can't bear it. The pressure is intense... do I burn this guy at the light? Didn't I just burn him at the last light? Does this chick like my car, or is she wondering if I'm a master of pleasure? Why do I even car what others think?

I literally grip the wheel and sweat until I get to where I need to be (412driver and -1- can attest to this, they've seen my sweaty shirt when I got out of the car). The AMG may be overkill for me, but since I only have one chance to live life the way I want, I stepped up to the plate.

When you really look at things in perpective, that "dream car" is never too far away. If you've been eyeing a Ferrari since the age of 8, chances are you'll get real close to one by the age of 50. But once you get that Ferrari, that's it. There's nothing better and there's nothing left to set that next goal. Once I get a Ferrari, will I be dissapointed for the rest of my life?

I was badly in love with the SLK55, so I stopped giving my change to the Starbucks baristas and I made sacrifices a long time ago. I did all that because I became mentally ill; bent on getting that "affordable exotic." Now the car sits in my garage, and every morning I come up with excuses to take it rather than the "other car." And a nice day out doesn't cut it anymore. I need to take into account the time of day I'll be going around town... it's really sick.

My AMG fixation has evolved beyond wanting one... it's now come down to how I can make sure I keep the miles off but still take it out for a drive almost every day.

If you really, really want a 55 and you want to experience this persistent battle, go for it. You can still reach for that Ferrari but at least you get close in the meantime. If you stay with the 350, you might never experience such intensity behind the wheel, but that could be a good thing.

I have no regrets because I do know that a Ferrari is still in my sights. I hope the R171 SLK will eventually be as iconic as the Jaguar E-type. It sure would be nice to have an SLK and a Ferrari to contemplate driving each morning.

Unless you want that intensity of that ideal combination of lethal power, speed, and looks, you could just stay with the 350 and keep your sanity!

Jeremy Clarkson from Top Gear owns an SLK55. He's also had a Ferrari 355, an SL55, and a Ford GT40, to name a few. More money brings more toys, but he's had the SLK55 the longest and he's a picky fellow with good points. That says a lot to me. I hope this helps cure your AMG disease. I didn't make it and there's probably no cure for it.

Since my "friends" have introduced me to tracking my car, I have been pushing to driving my 350 to the limit and starting to find that maybe the AMG is set up better for the track. So I understand the AMG envy.....
And I understand Easty's SLK Black envy.... after TWS....
:hb:

Darn,... I think I caught it also.......

I love having a stickR)
I know what you mean, there were times that I wanted to trade it in, but everytime I think about it, I still prefer having a clutch and can't do it. Money isn't an issue, it's more about driving pleasure, it puts a big smile on my face everytime I get in the SLK after driving my auto SUVs.

Real life I am with you about getting every penny out from your car and its good to use the ca for 10-15 years especially if its clean and maintained well.

Regarding Ferrari's and exotic's:
I used to love Ferrari's as my Father had a Gold F355 GTS F1 with Tubi exhaust system, however he sold it after 2-3 years of ownership and it had very low mileage. However he didnt lose that much but the money was invested properly in stocks.

However I did a good decision to get a SLK55 AMG, There are more F430's here than my SLK55 and its a good thing.

By owning an AMG I was very happy but then started thinking about exotic's again, I had a ride in a Gallardo Spyder and Honestly I used to hate the Coupe' but the Spyder was very nice. unfortunatley its startting price is quiet steep and once you fiddle with the options it gets out of hand with the carbonfiber , deviated stitching and rear camera.

Now adays its not necessary to buy a Ferrari or Lamborghini as there are other cars that are nearly as fast such as the BMW M6, 911 Turbo, Corvette Z06. In addition the F430 does not look as good as the older Ferrari's like the 355 , Testarossa.

I just would like Ferrari to go back to its amazing roots and give us a new 355 or testarossa or even Maranello. My uncle has the 599 GTB Fiorano and I am just not impressed with it.
