The Alfa Romeo brand could return to Formula One, Ferrari chairman Sergio Marchionne has indicated.

Alfa Romeo last operated an F1 team in 1985 but has a history of success in the sport. Giuseppe Farina and Juan Manuel Fangio won drivers' titles with Alfa in 1950 and 1951.

Ferrari's car carried an Alfa logo on the rear of the engine cover in the 2015 season.

Marchionne is chief executive of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, which owns both Alfa and Ferrari and, speaking at a media conference at Ferrari's Maranello headquarters, he said: "It's incredible how the Alfa Romeo brand remains in people's hearts.

"For that reason we are thinking of it returning to Formula One racing as our [Ferrari's] competitor.

"It's important for Alfa Romeo to return. It will be another competitor."
