Thought there was a book in me, turns out it's an update. Being a person of modest means I realized early on I couldn't compete in the expensive new car class targeting instead older and interesting.

Over the years I have owned: 60 Chrysler 63 Rambler 770 62 Imperial 62 Studebaker Hawk GT 66 T-Bird 69 Camaro Conv 67 Fleetwood 69 Olds 98 Sunbeam Alpine Spitfire Opel GT 75 Cordoba Seville 280Z X-1/9 poser Sentra (looked like a BMW not tagged as such) 83 87 95 Chrysler Lebaron Convertibles and now a 2002 SLK320.

Couple of years ago I started searching ebay for a 92-99 SL320 or SL500 because I don't know I'm perhaps insane, bored, seven year itch I can't scratch want a project car toy to play with while I still can having passed 65 with all the added complaints that brings to the table.

Actually found my SL bid and won it for $1,600 dealer didn't want to sell it for that price and by the time he got done I ended up losing the car and my deposit. Ebay protections are a totally different world when it comes to titled items, they only guarantee the title is valid.

Not finding many more SL's in my price range I started looking under Mercedes-Benz convertibles and came across an auction for a LK320 under Mercedes Other. Turned out the S had fallen off the back, described simply as, Guy ordered new tires and never came back, as is, radio missing, not running needs a fuel pump. Asked a number of questions including if the AC and Top worked, was told they did when the car stopped running.

Bidding started at $2,500 there were no bidders. Maybe no one was looking for an LK320 that week or they were all more savvy then me? On the last day the seller told me (he running the Naples Fl towing storage yard repair) if I bought the car he would deliver it no charge. I entered a bid of $2,500 and won it. Told him he could deliver any time just let me know when, total surprise when it showed up on a flat bed without any warning a week later. Arrived with a big dent ruining the front right fender and bending the wheel, not even a sorry.

Was told it would take 60 days to get title despite Florida offering a quicker title service for only $10 more. Ebay title protection ends if you change the car in any way, fix it, etc. Ebay feedback ends at 60 days, coincidence?

Well I had to have it. Ignored the title problem buying a used OEM fuel pump w/filter and installing along with a new battery and got it running. Car actually starts, runs, shifts as good as I could ask for. Is totally dry on the underside with no leaks of any kind. Might have helped I did everything to start the car before resorting to the fuel pump. BTW: The old pump had some really nasty lube inside that got loose, like a quarter cup of liquid super glue acid, ate the paint off my driveway and glued down a wrench. I believe it could blind or worse, be very careful making this exchange.

Had day dreams the car was a bargain, maybe parents wouldn't pay for the new tires and kid abandon an otherwise great car. Even if, someone got into the car stripping out quite a bit besides the radio, putting back broken pieces held in place with one screw.

So far from front to back I have replaced . . .

Outside Temp Sensor, one headlight assembly, one headlight bulb, right fender, straightened wheel, oil change mobil-1 5-w30, wavy hose that was plugged with a bic pen cap, air cleaners, battery, wipers, windshield, not OEM rv mirror, driver's sun visor, left and right vents, seat relay, radio, driver door interior latch assembly, glued door panels with shoe goo, hand brake cover, two primewell sport 235 tires with flat spots hope the other two will run out theirs. Two rubber lift cushions, rear bumper center impact strip.

Painted upper and lower grilles satin black. Turtle Jet Black wax and polish has helped the paint a lot. Painted portions of interior plastic with mb anthracite.

Current issues: Removed bubbled window tint don't know if I ruined the rear window defroster or came that way, nice to be able to see out clearly. Top does not work, tank is empty, not looking to clean up a big mess, roof liner held up with thumb tacks. Dash is all broken up inside, but looks OK. Everything but the fuel gauge appears to work all idiot lights come on and most stay on in part I believe due to P0500 speed sensor error due to previous owner adding 17 inch wheels, speed is off turning off Anti-Lock Brakes and ESP. Need left and right side mirrors, right could be sanded and painted, left won't hold position. Seats are OK though thin on padding. Center console needs to be replaced from cup holders to rear wall, shift height bezel needs to be leveled. And more I will think of after posting.

I bought my SLK 320 last summer for $7600. Fortunately it was almost perfect, owned by a car enthusiast who was mortally ill and wanted it to go to another enthusiast. I found a new door sill and rear view mirror online and even found a NOS M-B Motorola phone. The phone can't be used on the digital networks but it fills an ugly space under the armrest. I perfected the interior with the NOS interior paint. Although I paid a lot more than you for the car I believe I got the better deal considering the headaches I averted. I wish you luck on your project. You will love the car when it is all together.

Nice looking SLK. Much as I want a set of halo headlights, I'm coming to appreciate the OEM headlights with their clean white light not the yellow I see on so many cars. You know, your problem was my problem with the Chrysler, nothing to do besides changing out the bulbs for Sylvania Ultra's and replacing a radio that only got AM with a used OEM radio.
