Hello sexy people of SLKWorld!

I have discovered yet another fault with my SLK. While changing my spark plugs and installing new air filters, which my car needed badly apparently, I noticed a small oil leak.

Image

This is located at the rear of the engine, passenger (sitting in car - right side), at the top right behind the rear-most cylinder.

In the past, mostly during highway driving, my car would sometimes warn me that my oil is low therefore I should add some. When I would check at my next opportunity the oil level was either perfectly fine or (on one occasion) did need to get topped up a little. Throughout the course of last summer I used 1/2 a quart of oil to keep my car at the proper oil level.

At the time of this post the leak seems benign at worst. The only real issue is the annoying "add oil" warning when there is no need to.

Here is what I would like to know; what is this part, is it DIY material, is it worth the time/cost to fix, and what are the implications if left unchecked?

As always, your time is very much appreciated.

Regards,
Ak

Regarding the air filters - if I did not know better I would swear that someone was building a man-made beach resort in both my air boxes.

After changing the plugs and filters I have improved my highway mileage by 2 L/100. With the increase in fuel economy the parts will be paid back before the end of June.

For those wondering:
Average city mileage: (before) 13 L/100 (after) ?? L/100
Average hwy mileage: (before) 11.8 L/100 (after) 9.8 L/100 [It was still decreasing before I arrived home tonight, may be even lower!]

I would say this is the cam expansion plug oil leak which is a well known issue (DTB S-B-01.30/23b May 27, 2009: "Oil Seepage from Back of Cylinder Head" refers).

This is an easy fix - search on here and I reckon you'll find a DIY guide.

Cheers,
Brian

minor leak

HI Ak..
That is very common and a very easy repair. I'm not sure of the part# but it is just a plastic cap that covers an assembly hole(called a camshaft housing plug) There are two, a small one and a large one - the one that is leaking in your picture is the large one obviously. I did mine last year. You could almost pull it off with your fingers but I recommend using a flat head screwdriver to pop it off - just be careful. You can buy a new one online or get one at the dealership for less than $20. Then just pop it on and your done....otherwise it will get worse and you will smell oil burning all the time. Piece of cake.
I think this is the part# Part #: S3-12866-00002 but please verify it.

As already said, common and dead easy to fit a new cap.
If you have time on your side, you could consider using a good quality sealer around the new cap, such as the Loctite one for plumbing that cures with lack of air. I used it a long time back with success, but the surfaces need to be totally oil free (clean with cellulose thinners) and allowed to rest for a couple of days.
