I recently took my 2004 SLK320 to the Merc dealership because the SRS light had come on whilst driving. SIX hours later they inform me that the computer that controls the SRS system needs to be replaced (due to the diagnostic codes they received from it) and that the cost will likely be around $1500. Yikes! So I decided to get a second opinion, I took the car to a specialist dealer in Melbourne FL ( Vlad's Autobahn ) today and they diagnosed problem as a simple communication error between the computer and the defunct Tele-Aid button in the overhead console. Fixed for $100.

Also, the headliner was sagging and needed replacing. $600 for a new one from the dealership. I removed the headliner assembly myself and took it to a local auto upholstery shop where the guy replaced it for $90. It looks great !

Total savings $1910.
