Just purchased a 2005 SLK 350. The previous owner removed the factory nav and radio an replaced with an Alpine VA-W205 which is a discontinued unit with an out dated GPS.

In doing so he made all steering wheel controls non functional.

I just purchased an OEM SLK radio only, no Nav as I will use Garmin, better and cheaper as far as I'm concerned. That being said I plan on replacing the Alpine with the OEM Stock Radio.

I want to know if I'll find the correct wiring harness for the stock install behind the Alpine or will I need to get a new wiring harness. Also, will I be able to restore the functions of the Smart Wheel.

Most aftermarket installations usually add to the original wiring, without hacking any bits off, so you should be OK.

Hi dap190, a warm welcome from Southern Arizona. Congratulations on your new ride. Sounds like Woolly is spot on regarding your radio question. I think I read somewhere about having to go to the dealership to get the stock radio unlock code. Good luck with your project. Enjoy the people, the forum, and top down cruisin'.

If you can post a photo of the front and rear of the radio it might help, as the one you've bought might use thw quadlock connector and the original the car had may have been fibre optics .
The only real way you're going to know what you have is to remove the radio and see what you have ...

Here is what I would do. Follow Jeff's advice and get a Datacard for your SLK. This will tell you what kind of headunit was in the car before the Alpine. It makes a big difference whether it was an A20 or a COMAND Unit. Don't worry too much, though, as there a 80% chance it was an A20, which would be the one you want.

Post a pic and/or the part # of the SLK OEM Radio you have purchased. Then we can tell whether there are any issues with a swap.

IMHO - If you are installing an A20 into a car that started with an A20, then you should probably get what you want, including the restoration of the steering wheel controls with minimal trouble. If either prior or current is COMAND then your world just got more complicated. Not impossible, just more complicated.
