I've got a 98 SLK 230 with a terrible Kenwood deck that was installed by the previous owner. I"m looking into an Alpine that has the XM radio pre installed. I'd like to save some money and do the install myself, but...currently there is a "pop" sound when I change the source on the deck, and when I power it off and on. The gentleman at Best Buy said I needed a LP6-4 LOCPRO 4 channel line output converter to eliminate the noise. Is this because of the Bose amplifier that's factory installed? Has anyone dealt with this?

Thanks,
Mike :)

i know that this is a late response to your question, sorry.

the "pop" you are getting is related to a voltage incompatibility between the head unit and the bose multi-channel amp. to fix this you can add a simple inline filter to the rca outputs from the head unit between the head unit and the bose amp.

the rca connection should be made from the "front" outputs as the bose amp uses a single stereo pair as the input and separates the amp's channels and outputs within the amp itself. it sorts the outputs by frequency band and sends the low frequency info to the rear speakers and the midrange and high frequencies to the front door mounted speakers. in essence, the amplifier selects it's outputs by frequency and directs outputs to the appropriately assigned speaker - left and right tweeter, left and right midrange, and the rear mounted woofers.

again, "pops" and "thumps" occur as a mismatch of the head unit's line outputs and the bose amplifier's inputs developed as a current ground loop. the issue is corrected by using inline filters. i used those prior to replacing the bose amplifier with a 4 channel clarion amp, crossovers for the door mounted speakers, and re-wiring the rear mounted woofers, that being a more acceptable solution for me.

i hope this helps.
