I've got a 98 SLK 230. Had some overheating issues about a month ago. Replaced the thermostat, problem fixed, for a few weeks. Now it's back. Here are the specifics:
Some mornings, I have no heat. I'lll drive a few miles, it might start working, it might not.
It's intermittent. I can go several days with no issues, then all of a sudden, it overheats, dumps all the coolant, and I have stop, let it cool off, refill it and I'm on my way.
Once the heat starts to work, I can sometimes hear the heater fan doors (?) opening and closing under the dash.

I think it's safe to say the new thermostat is likely not bad. Could it be the water pump? Any other ideas?

Thanks,
Mike
