I mentioned the plans for the car below, bought just yesterday, in the New Member Thread, but to refresh, we buy cars, fix them up, and sell them with every penny going to the Phoenix Children's Hospital. This SLK will be our 13th car donated to date. I've lurked here for a few years and have always wanted to do an R171 -- tried to find a 55 but just could not get the kind of deal we needed. Anyway, this car is in great shape, nearly flawless, has only 29K miles on it, and has already been a fun driver the last couple days. Here is what we have planned thus far:

19x8 and 19x9.5 inch TSW Valencia wheels in silver with 235/35 and 265/30 tires.
BC Racing Coilover suspension
Front bumper and hood repaint for small pocks, all touch-ups and full detail
Touchscreen head unit, reverse cam and steering wheel controls (it has HK, which I think sounds great and will only improve with a modern head unit, EQ, etc.)
Engine tuning, exhaust, possible headers

I welcomes any ideas to add to above.

Here it is as it came home yesterday, the "before" photo.

BTW, I'm not a fan of the chrome pieces in the bumper area -- I just looked closer and it appears they are actually covers that go over the paint, so those will be coming off. I assume the lower one is painted black, but may repaint it red when it goes to our paint sponsor.

The car drives flawlessly. I know more aggressive wheels and tires, plus the new suspension will really tighten things up and give it some more edginess. The engine has a nice pep to it. I don't assume we'll get much from bolt-ons and tuning but just want to add a little grunt and peppiness. The interior is in perfect shape -- we normally redo seats with diamond stitched leather, but these seats are perfect so not needed. It will be nice to add a stereo with a modern touchscreen and Bluetooth, reverse cam, etc. I really like how the HK sounds and know it will only get better.

I have not put the top down as the ABS light came on yesterday right before I picked it up and the top will not function -- the dealer had to order a speed sensor, which will be put in tomorrow, it should be good to go from there.

That's it for now. Once completed, one of our dealer sponsors will list it for sale, donating all of their advertising, etc., and every penny will go to the Phoenix Children's Hospital. I normally use the vanity plate 4PHXKDS, but on this car, I think we'll go with SLK4PCH.

Check out all of our prior builds at www.facebook.com/wheelsforwheels - and no flaming on all the Solstices!

Thanks in advance for the tips and advice I will need going forward.

I look forward to getting started this week.

Before worrying about hunting power try this:

Service seals, drainholes:

SLK batteries can go dead on as little as 3 weeks standing. Worth installing a ctek (or similar) battery tender.

Just getting going on the build. One of the four TSW wheels had a shipping delay and will not deliver until Tuesday, so the package will not go on until Wednesday. We did secure a brand new Alpine DVD touchscreen navigation unit and all supporting hardware from Don at inMobile Integrated Solutions in Scottsdale, so looking forward to seeing and hearing how that works with the excellent HK system in the car. Also, a rear wing arrived yesterday and Arizona Collision Center of Tempe will paint and install when they do their touch-ups on the car (the fitment appears to be great). We have basically secured all sponsorships needed and just have to work into the schedules at the various shops. I've enjoyed driving the car and have been very impressed. Couple thoughts:

Seat recline restrictions are maddening (well covered here, but just nutty).

Rear windows not going down all the way with the top down seems like a curious design decision.

Fit and finish is excellent and the car is very tight.

I really look forward to feeling how the driving dynamics change after adding larger, lower profile and higher performance tires plus the new, adjustable suspension -- it's a little floaty now - we won't go harsh at all on the settings, and will only lower a bit, but think the improvement will be significant.

Not sure if there is much to be gained from exhaust and tune, but at least look forward to some more sound and peppiness.

Stay tuned.

Ref. rear windows not going down, has the fitting a Smarttop been considered? Maybe @ModsforCars would consider donating/sponsoring one for such a good cause?
:D
I pm'd him the info earlier as I did not want to disturb his Mod thread :D

Also, not sure if I could get support as these pieces are quite expensive, but looking into full headers, cats, exhaust to go with the dyno tune. From what I have read searching here, these mods would result in at least a noticeable seat of the pants improvement. Any more thoughts appreciated.

Made some progress today as TSW Wheels and Wheel Specialists Inc. teamed up to add a gorgeous set of wheels and brand new performance tires. TSW Valencia wheels in 19x8 and 19x9.5 are wrapped with more aggressive Lexani high performance rubber - even new TPMS sensors were added. Soon the fender gaps will be filled in a bit with a donated coilover suspension from BC Racing. Much more to come but what a beautiful start!

Its a 3.5L N/A motor so not much gain from a tune, headers, ECU remap, dyno, etc. etc... For a 2010 350, you are already at ~300bhp and the most you'd wring out of that motor is ~20bhp, tops. Not gonna be worth all the fuss. Alternatively, if the car doesn't have an X-pipe, consider removing the front-most resonator and replacing with an X-pipe. Maybe a muffler change (MagnaFlow is always an option), and a K/N or a high efficiency air filter like BMC can give you better breathing and maybe another couple of butt hp?

Those rims are already a huge improvement on the look, and the BC racing COs will only make it look more awesome. I will be interested in the sound system improvement to the HK you plan... and when this get added, a review of performance will be good to read.

The 350 is the mid-range model in the SLK portfolio and IMHO the overall best bang for your bucks.... It does everything well without much effort, so you are already on the right track.

Good luck with this worthy project and keep us updated with progress towards getting this car ready to go to the lucky charity...

Thanks for the great thoughts. Yeah, I know not much to be gained with bolt-ons, so we'll see what we can secure from sponsors. If anything, maybe get a few seat of the pants hp and some added sound, which will create the feel of more response. I'm really impressed with the car and it drives beautifully. I think the HK stereo is really good with my old CD's, so look forward to the donated Alpine touchscreen with better EQ and reverse camera.

"Seat of the pants"---altered throttle response will do that: consider something like Sprint Booster or Pedal Commander. .

I ordered a Pedal Commander - I've known about these, but never ordered one for any vehicles. This is one car that feels like it could benefit. The pedal throw is so long and so soft -- there is some nice power but you don't really get it without fully flooring it. I know this is a bit of a gimmick, but hoping in this case that it helps. I expect the car will really feel sharper once the coilovers go on and we do a couple things to brighten up the motor.

A Pedal Commander will give you a different feel for the car's performance. Yes, it is a gimmick, but a darn good one! Once installed, choose the combo of "Sport" or "Sport+" of the unit paired to your tranny in "S" mode for best performance. I have similar unit on my 350 (made by Piecha in Germany) and it is the best mod on my car, bar none. The car and myself love it...
