hey there, I have a 2001 320 with a manual trans that works great except for fourth gear. One day it shifted perfect, the next day it did not. It won't slide into fourth. Any suggestions? Bad linkage? internal problems? The car has about 160K miles and am wondering if I should look to a re manufactured trans. They are hard to find. I won't do a donor since I have no assurance that it will be any better than my current one.

after a few weeks here on the forum I have learned so much about the SLK, thanks.
But I have yet to get any advice on which route to take on fixing my fourth gear problem.
Who should I trust to sort out why the 6 speed won't shift into fourth? Every other gear works great. Shifting from third to fifth is no big deal but you need fourth on down shifts.
Any route I take sounds like it will be expensive....

How old is the trans fluid or when was it replaced last?

I took the SLK to a local "Euro Car" shop here in SA and after testing the trans they decided it was a "bad synchro" keeping it from shifting into fourth. They checked the trans oil, said it was fine.
This problem was not progressive....we had no problems with it shifting, one day fourth was fine, the next day nada.
I have had so many cars with manual transmissions and never had one problem with them in the life of the cars.
Has anyone else with a 6 speed MB SLK had similar problems?

I'm not there to actually check for myself, but I fully expect that the shop is right about it being an internal problem. You probably need to start looking for someone who can disassemble the trans, replace all brass and any questionable bearings.

I would love to have a nice six speed car. Care to trade it for an earlier five speed car?

Can't believe it

I jump into the 320 yesterday for a quick run to the corner store....without thinking I shift from 3rd to 4th (usually 3rd to 5th)...and what do you know? It shifts perfectly.
Upshift, downshift, over and over 4th now works....for how long, who knows but it is nice having a perfectly working 6 speed.
I was planning on dropping between 2-3K for a trans fix....not just yet.
NICE!
