Hi all,

I am in need of rear tires and was wondering of I could fit 255/40R17 instead of the 245/40R17. Keeping the original size in the front.

Thanks for your comments

Did you have 17 inch rims?

How wide are the wheels? I had 255 on my 9.5" wide 18" wheels and just went to 265. The 265 is very tight but 255 was no issue.

it's only a 10mm difference. I've seen where some (for example) 255 wide tires were actually narrower than 245 tires. depends on the manufacturer.

The recommended tyre width will depend on the rim width. The table below will give you the range. The max and min have slight side effects, but minimal impact for normal driving.

The 10mm difference on a 40 profile tyre will also raise the effective rear axle height by 4mm (changing the car's 'rake'), but again, this is minimal on a road car. It will also increase rolling resistance, which will have a small impact on performance and will reduce fuel efficiency slightly.

It is worth noting that you can 'over tyre' a car, which will impact the overall handling.

/edit Finally, real nerds go for the ideal tyre on the narrowest rim for minimum rotational mass, as this can have a larger impact on acceleration than reducing static mass.
