Help!! Recently purchased a '05 350 SLK, (which looks new, 12,000 miles), but I put in 229.51 oil by mistake, instead of 229.5. Do I need to take it out immediately, or will this work until I change the oil again, which will probally be in 5,000 miles or so. I love this car, AMG package, command, upgraded sound system, nav... Please someone let me know what kind of idiot I am, and I will promise to read labels more carefully.

IIRC the 229.51 engine oil is fine -- higher specs than with 229.5 (which is what's recommended at least for the SLK 55). The 229.51 is spec mainly for diesel which has higher requirements. The MB dealers are starting to use Mobil 1 5W40 on SLK 55 engines and this is spec for 229.51. Try a search on Google on Mobil1 0W40 vs Mobil 1 ESP formula 5W40.

Yep I run 5w30 229.51. Do people realise on a 55 this probably liberates about 10bhp over a higher visco. Cheap power for sure and better economy.

Thanks for the responses. Looked up quite a lot of info concerning both 229.5 and 229.51 oils, but did not find anything about substituting 229.51 for 229.5. From your answers I will keep the 229.51 in until next oil change.

Thanks to this Forum I Learned how to change the oil. Like to do as much work on my car as possible, since in past experiences, most every time "professionals" worked on my car, I was unhappey with the work, or something else broke while the work the done.
