Mercedes has taken a lot of flak for replacing the old naturally aspirated V8 with a twin-turbo V6 engine. Of course, nobody had driven the car when those negative remarks were made, so they turned out to be unfounded. This next video of the 2017 Mercedes-AMG SLC 43 should prove once and for all that this car deserves the Affalterbach badge.

The video was shot in Cannes by Automann-TV using an official Mercedes press car. It's got all the bells and whistles, including a spotless frozen grey paintjob that does the AMG kit justice.

The part we're interested in is the engine, more specifically the bit at the end that makes the sound. Sure, a naturally aspirated V8 is a talented thing, but the V6 has better pops off the throttle and the rest of the soundtrack is 95% there. Just like in the case of the C63, the compromise being made is almost unperceivable.

There are parts of the interior that give the SLC away as being a facelift of the SLK. But we've seen so many navigation systems perched on top of the dash that this old-fashioned setup is a welcomed sight.

All these positive things being said, the SLC 43 AMG doesn't give us that "my life is pointless without this car" feeling that the AMG GT has. Mercedes is trying to keep the old segments alive while also introducing new ones, which results in a somewhat confusing mix. What we want to point out is that very few people will pay upwards of €60,000 for one of these when the C63 AMG Cabriolet is just around the corner and will pack a V8. If you don't really need that 4.0-liter twin-turbo in your life, there's also going to be a C43 AMG version with the same mill you see here, plus the option for all-wheel drive and two extra seats.

The thought of a C63 Convertible is very appealing...............
The only thing my SLK55 cannot do is the '4 seat thing' and it'd be nice to have that ability !

Sure, i could get a CLK55 convertible and move the SLK55 on, but they dont look great IMO (actually look old now) and apparently the scuttle shake on them is horrendous.

Not sure about these SLC43's. Look sharp, probably better to drive, but the fact there is no whopping V8 under the bonnet just leaves me meh to be honest.

I'm sure whoever does buy one thou would be very happy with their purchase!

I don't know who they got to plaster the walls of the tunnel at 2.35 into the video, but I've certainly seen it done smoother.

Lovely sound. I crackle on the overrun was sublime.

The change from V8 to V6 was hardly unheralded so no one is surprised, but it is a shame.

I liked the video but: and it is a big one, driving gloves! I mean, Driving Gloves! All it needed was flares.

No, thanks.

If I did the upgrades to my '09 AMG, that this new car has, it would sound MUCH better, and firmly plant it in my rear view mirror, be more fun to drive, and get better mileage (well...>:D). They squandered a good opportunity.

They should have stayed w/ the 4.0 V8 Turbo, and tuned the car at The Green Hell. An F-Type sounds better (and is much faster), and, don't even think of competing with the 718 for handling.

Yes, it's probably a great tourer, and for taking long weekend trips. But, I'll keep my '09, thank you.

Having played around with the same spec as I currently have with my 55 the car pans out at...Base 43SLC starts at $71,000 adding the same options I come in at $85k Cdn + taxes, freight, PDI that means I am looking at $100,000 :surprise:....err no thanks.

Lets see what the R173 offers if and when that comes along, or a V8 bi-turbo if MB are brave enough to add one to the line up in a year or so if they intend mirroring the C class...perhaps the same engine as the C63s...can only live in hope >:D

The Mercedes SLC43 Has AMG Flavor But Isn't An AMG Meal

Road & Track didn't seem very impressed with the SLC43.

The SLC43 is a completely different animal. It has two fewer cylinders, fifty-three fewer horsepower, and it isn't even a real AMG. Just as Maybach is now Mercedes-Maybach, a higher level of gloss applied to an S-class sedan, so too has Mercedes-AMG become a flavoring as well as a full meal. The SLC43 is tuned by AMG, but its twin-turbo V6 is a mass-produced unit, not a handbuilt heart wearing the signature of a master craftsman. Just pop the hood and see. No AMG plaque, only a red stripe on the plastic engine cover.

Slc43

I got a good look at the SLC43 not long ago. It is a lovely car. Appears to be just a little larger than the SLK but a little smaller? (maybe) than the old SL500/55 model. I did not see the specs, but est that it is heavier than an SLK. I love turbo cars. They are usually easy to tune for more oomph but MB has a way of throwing obstacles in the way of that. Hopefully, they made it easy to do? I had an old C32 AMG with the belt driven supercharger and it was fast and torquey and fun to drive but one of my biggest complaints was that it had no exhaust note. All I could hear was the SC whine. Not bad but nothing compared to an AMG V8 bellow. I suggest that AMG listen to the Jaguar V6 F-type sound track if they want to go with V6 power.

Nothing I see with the SLC makes me want to trade my SLK55. Now, I could have a serious love affair with an SL55 if it was white, lol. I don't mind a little extra weight if it also comes with 150hp extra power. I see where MB is going but the SLC falls short for me.

At this point, the only thing we can HOPE for is a Black Series (again, HOPEFULLY done right), or, an SLC55/63 with a hand-built V8?
