2013 SLK 250 Vibration Sound in Engine Compartment

10463 Views 32 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  Karlsiemieniuk
I have a vibration noise coming from the vicinity of the engine compartment. It occurs only when the engine is at operating temp, the outside temp is less than 60 F, and the engine RPMs are between about 2200 and 2800. Has anyone else experienced this?

It sounds like the exhaust manifold problem as noted in this thread: http://www.slkworld.com/slk-r172-general-discussion/59265-slk-350-exhaust-rattle-different-fix.html

I have taken it in twice. Third time is scheduled for next week. So far, the dealer hasn't driven the car sufficiently to duplicate the conditions I mentioned in my post. I will attempt to get that solved next week.
The exhaust manifold problem you mentioned is on the six cylinder engine. I have the four in my car.

Oops, my mistake.
I took my SLK to the dealer last week. The service advisor followed by one of the dealer's lead technicians went with me on separate road tests and both heard the noise load and clear. Following the road tests, they spent a day diagnosing where the noise was coming from and discussing it with M-B. They concluded that the noise is coming from the exhaust camshaft advance adjuster. Parts have been ordered and should arrive late this week. Fortunately, this is totally covered by my warranty.

Hmmm. I have a 2013 SLK250. I have had this vibration/noise problem ever since I got the car - brand new from MB dealership 2 1/2 years ago. I have had them look at this a number of times and they have replaced numerous parts - vacuum pump, airconditioning parts to no avail. When I first told them about the noise (about a month after getting the car) they didn't believe me. They said 'oh well it will get worse over time so we should be able to find out what it is then'. I still have the noise and it did get worse over time. Now they are saying that it is the camshaft adjuster and the noise is 'standard' for this model!!!! If they had said to me before I purchased the car that this model has a noise I wouldn't have bought it. There was no noise in the demo model I test drove. I am very unhappy about this

Ounce, it sounds like you have the same problem I had. My car was repaired by my M-B dealer this week. They replaced both the intake and exhaust camshaft adjusters. Fortunately, my car was still under warranty and I didn't have to pay anything. The service rep told me the cost was about $3,300 for parts and labor. He also told me that the service technicians were able to reproduce the sound both when driving the car and when using some test equipment and that M-B authorized the warranty repair. After picking up the car I drove it for about 45 minutes and the sound was gone. Hopefully, it won't return.

thanks Wick63. I got my car back on Friday and the noise is still there. The paperwork from this latest check says '
NORMAL OPERATIONAL NOISES OF THE CAMSHAFT ADJUSTORS FOR THIS
MODEL OF VEHICLE...
TESTED ANOTHER VEHICLE WITH 274 ENGINE WITH 950CM AND THIS
VEHICLE DOES NOT MAKE THIS NOISE, COMPARED TO ANOTHER
VEHICLE WAS HARD TO REPRODUCE NOISE / RATTLE, REPLACED
VACCUM PUMP - STILL PRESENT, REMOVED AND RESTOCKED,
ROADTESTED WITH XENTRY AND CUT OFF BOTH CAM SOLENOIDS,
NOISE GONE, REPLACED BOTH CAM ACTUATORS. INTAKE AND
EXHAUST - STILL PRESENT, REMOVED BOTH AND RESTOCK ,
DROVE WITH REPRESENTATIVE FROM MERCEDES BENZ AND COMPARED
NOISE WITH A DONOR VEHICLE, NOISE AUDIBLE IN DONOR VEHICLE
NOISE IS NORMAL OPERATIONAL NOISE FROM EXHAUST CAM ADJSUTER'. seems that your pronlem is solved but mine still isn't. Don't know what else to do or who to go to to get this fixed. it is still under warrenty for another few months.

Sounds like you're getting the runaround from the M-B dealer. My dealer's service guys said that they had never experienced the sound before in another car with that engine and we're worked directly with M-B to determine and resolve the problem. They told me that the sound was not normal. You might try contacting M-B Customer Service.

do not back down from Dealer. Ounce

i had same situation where, Dealer couldn't duplicate the issue and didn't do anything about it.

Solution?

record video or record the noise and bring it to dealer as evidence.

after i showed it to them what it was doing, they couldn't say NO.

it end up being exhaust manifold and had to be replaced... can you imagine if i had to pay out of my pocket because they didn't want to fix it under warranty???? yea...

record the noise in video and bring it to them and show them what its doing. make them fix it.

Hi I have the same problem in my 2013 MB SLK 250. Just like you, I have been to the dealer three times and my car is still at the dealership in Connecticut. They first tied down some vacuum hoses to no avail. They then replaced the cowl under the windshield and the noise is still there. Now they will replace the vacuum pump. From what I read that may not solve the problem either. Can you help by sharing the dealership info where you had the repair done
I have a rattle at startup and tick over been in 3 time now been told this is normal, been given some bull no doubt

Mine as well, but goes away after warmup. The ticking part sounds to me like hydraulic lifters that haven't primed with oil yet, and the rattling is definitely exhaust cats or something. After the car warms up it all goes away and I have no problems whatsoever, just the noise. I have learned to accept some noises coming from vehicles as it is a characteristic of the car. I don't fret the rattles or ticks too much as irritating as they can be sometimes (I'll fix these later maybe), but I do get concerned by more problem noises like knocking, tapping, roaring, or anything that seems excessive.
BMC1956, the noise problem with my car was successfully diagnosed and repaired by M-B of Kansas City, 855-979-2434.

Thank you so much for your reply. Is there any reference that the service people from New Country MB service in Hartford CT could communicate with their counterparts in Kansas City MB service about the diagnosis of your car. Thank you again for your post on this.
Dear Wick63, Was it the replacement of the intake and exhaust camshaft adjusters that solved the noise problem in your 2103 SLK 250. I just wanted to confirm that. Thanks again.
