Hello, just to introduce myself I am a new member based in Berkshire in the UK. My wife and I bought a 2011 SLK as our second car, it's a solid red (can't recall the name of the colour). I previously owned a BMW Z3 3.0 which barely got used as I have a company car (C220 AMG Line estate) and she had a Mini 1.6, so we decided to combine the two cars.

I didn't want to feel I'd lost too much performance from the Z3, so I found that the SLK 250 petrol model seemed to have only slightly slower 0-60 times and in practice, with the 7 speed auto I knew that it wouldn't feel much slower to drive. It is obviously a step up from a non Cooper Mini 1.6 so my wife is more than happy with the way the SLK drives. So far it's shown a small improvement over the mpg of the Z3, but this is mostly down to the shorter trips it has been used on recently.

Unfortunately we managed to miss the fact that this car had been owned by a smoker, so much of the detailing I've been doing on this 'new' car has been revolving around trying to rid the car of the last traces of cigarette smoke: I've cleaned it 2 or 3 times throughly and given it a treatment with a Chlorine dioxide cleaner 'Airvidox' which has got rid of nearly all traces, though I've ordered another tub so I can give the car a second treatment (and to make sure I get the aircon on 'recirculate' properly this time. :crying:).

I'm a member of 'Detailing world' so I have a thread running there too, showing the various stages as I work my way around the car. So far I've machine polished the bonnet and front wings, removed all four wheels for a deep clean/polish/seal of them and the wheel arches. I'll be posting on here too as I progress round the car...there are the usual swirls and light scratches from a less than careful washing regime by the previous owner, but nothing that can't be buffed out and/or greatly improved.

(I'll come back to this thread when I'm on a different laptop, so I can add some photos).

Hi and welcome to SLKWorld.com from the UK Midlands - Thanks for joining us and posting an intro! :)

We have quite a few members in the UK that like to meet up from time to time. If you're interested in joining us sometime, just keep an eye on the UK Region section, as we post meeting plans there!

There is a summary post that I maintain for our UK meets here. Links to examples and pictures from last year's meets are available here. We're a friendly group, and always happy to welcome new members at any of our meets.

We're also plotting where our UK members are - check out the thread for that here: SLKWorld UK & Ireland Members and Meeting Points Map - Please let me know if you'd like to be added to the map. :tu:

Thanks for the welcoming posts and further useful info. :tu: I have to confess Idiot101 that I'm not a 'Pro' detailer, just that I post on Detailing World (so I'm as obcessed with detailing as most on there are ).

Just waiting on my next batch of cleaning materials to arrive, then I can get on a bit more, just hope the weather is kind as I have to work outside (my very, very long term resoration project RS2000 is in my garage).

^ 55 greetings from London!

Presumably you've changed the pollen filter?
Yes I did that quite early on as it's often mentioned in various threads about getting rid of smoke smell. It didn't make any difference in our car though, but I wonder if it's less likely to make much difference though unless the smoker typically drove around with the car in recirculate mode, as the air passing through the filter will be fed with outside air?

I've just got another pot of Airvidox, so I'm going to give it another go with that over a 24 hour period instead on Monday as my wife is working away so won't need the car for a few days.

On the plus side; the bodywork is beading up nicely as we've had a bit of rain today, so I'm glad I got a quick coat of wax on it last weekend.

I was working on the basis that a clean filter would aid in the overall improvement of the odour in the car, and recirc can't be ruled out from the previous owner. Although there was no evidence of a smoker in my car previously, it had a bit of a stale smell with the blower on, and naturally a new filter solved it, and increased the airflow to keep pumping fresh air in and stale out.
Another thing you can try is leaving it completely open in strong sunshine for a couple of hours. UV is quite effective at breaking certain odour molecules.
If all else fails you could get yourself a pipe and an ounce of rough shag....

We bought this car just as 'the beast from the east' arrived in the UK, so it's only recently that I've had much chance to get my DA polisher out and start to work my way round the car to put right years of neglect by the previous owner. It's obviously been washed in an automatic car wash judging by the swirls in the paintwork as shown below:

This is typical of the whole car; looks good from a distance or in the shade, but once the sun hit it then it looks awful as above. At least a quick fix was a coat of 'glaze' then some Bilt Hamber Double speed wax to protect it while I found time to work my way round the car.

The paint is really hard, so I had to get some extra heavy duty 'microfibre' polishing pads to use with some Meguiars DA microfibre compound. This has taken the swirls out of the paint and I've done some localised wet sanding to remove/reduce some deeper scratches so the Meguiars has then polished out the sanding marks.

I've still got the roof panel to do, but I've gone round the whole car over 3 sessions of approx 5-6 hours each. I still want to go back over some scratches on the bonnet and boot lid, but it's getting there. Even in full sun there are now only very minor marks visible in the deep wet looking gloss.

Work I did yesteday on the back bumper, numberplate area:

The offside, post 2 stage polish and after 2 coats of DSW:

I also gave the interior a second treatment with 'Airvidox' to try to get rid of the last traces of cigarette smell. The first treatment made a big difference, but I didn't circulate it through the air con properly, so this time I managed to do it right. It'll smell like a swimming pool for a few days first, then hopefully the last trace of cigarettes will be gone.

That just leaves the 'metal' centre console to try to sort out some nasty scratches...I'll put some close up photos first before I remove it and try to sand the scratches out. If that doesn't work, then I'll search for a good used part instead.
