Hi, Ya'll!

I have recently purchased at 2006 SLK280 with 66k on the clock, and until my check engine light came on yesterday, I have enjoyed it (computer coming in today from Amazon to see the code, and pray it isn't the engine failure I've read a bit about.) Anyway, it's 300 miles away from being in its extended warranty period, so hopefully it will limp along if so.

Anyway, it's a fairly base model, black on black. I'm 6'1", and after I figured out how to lower the seat, it feels great (can't say the same about a Mazdaspeed Miata I bought on a whim.) It will be a partial daily driver, along with an 2013 Ram 1500. I traded in my 2nd Honda CR-Z, which is a great car I can't recommend enough.

I've only recently appreciated Benz, previously I've always been a Porsche person. But given the IMS problems Boxster owners must worry over, I decided to give Benz a try. Now I'm wishing I had done a bit more research.

Welcome from Hillsboro, Oregon, Brian! It sounds like our cars are pretty similar; does yours also have the One True Transmission, the 6-speed manual? Check engine light can be a lot of things, most of them fairly mundane. My car threw one only a few weeks after I got it for a busted thermostat. The balance shaft sprocket issue is relatively rare, and higher mileage cars are usually immune (it shows up sooner rather than later). At 66k, you are getting into the range where that failure is unlikely to appear. Read the code, and get it into the shop before the extended warranty runs out.

Check engine light could be a number of issues...and the two major problems with the 272 probably won't pop up on a standard OBD2 scanner...

It's unlikely that the cam sprocket problem is the issue and the oil burn wouldn't trigger the light. Any other symptoms? You say it's under warranty? Then initiate a claim asap. Do use MB or an indy for service?

Thanks for the welcome(s) guys. Yes, the car has the (very low geared) six speed, but still gives remarkable gas mileage.

The CEL was just a high engine compartment temperature warning. I was worried for nothing.
