Hi,

So....I've gotten a bit ahead of myself :D

One of the major things which bugged me about the interior of this car I've put a deposit down on was the storage compartment next to the ashtray is broken - the bottom trim is snapped...how that even happens I do not know...however after searching high and low for approximately 6-10 hours on the tinternet I found the part in the right colour (I effing hope) I probably paid too much for it, but it's an original part and really from what I could see online, very hard to find with that trim,...sure trim kits are available but at 2 and half times the price I paid for this and they are stick on plastics... (see part pic)

Just wanted to check in with you guys... this seems easy enough to replace I found the following video;

The video is of an 03 model, but it can't be that different, right? ....RIGHT? lol.

Paint order happening tomorrow or Friday.... by the end of next week I hope to have her interior fully refurbed... well... repaint the console, door interior, maybe even seats and replace this thing.

Any thoughts or suggestions to make this go a little bit easier would be more than welcome folks.

thanks again to everyone who posts, the wealth of knowledge here is unreal, after 12 to 18 months I might be ready to sit an R170 slk mechanics exam!

NB: No I don't speak German or whichever language that is, however I have eyes and can see where the screwdriver is going!

My twopenneth worth....

I've not delved as deep as you need to so I can only help you part way. I took the upper console apart to run cables to the tray for my smartphone/head unit refit. That said:

  • As shown, take out the radio first.
  • For ease of access I took out the tray/drinks holder (thin screwdriver under the two guides and lift the tray over the clip on both sides and gently slide the tray out. I also 'cheated'. As mine is an automatic, I got the car into D (without starting the engine) before removing the panel.
  • Two self-tappers are now visible where the tray was. These are easy to remove.
  • At the top of where the radio was are two more smaller self-tappers. Again, easy to remove but also easy to lose down into the console innards. Use a magnetic screwdriver for these and cup your hand underneath as the last threads are undone. Just in case.
  • The plate should now work free as he showed and you can unplug the switches on the bottom panel.
As I said, I stopped there. But I can help putting it together by warning you about those smaller self-tappers. Be careful aligning the console before trying to insert these and watch out for them dropping down into the innards once more. Don't do the self-tappers up tight till they are all located. That way you can make small adjustments to the console as you fit it all back.

As a sideline, thanks for this - I have now decided to take out the bottom tray and ashtray and fit something else there. I don't smoke so the ashtray is not used (but I did find £4.50 in the coin slot when I opened it) and I need an extra switch or two for other things in the car so may fit a panel there instead.

Good luck!

Seems like an eternity ago I posted this.

STILL waiting on delivery of the ashtray storage compartment & Paint however after a few more reads it appears I probably haven't ordered enough of the paint I need, still I will make a start with what I have and see how I get on, should be easier to gauge then how much more I will need.
@savcom thanks for the heads up regarding the screws, I have a magnetic but will be extra careful.

Video's & Pictures to follow. I was warned no cursing.

Cheers,

So....

As it turns out, it literally just pops out... :D

However me being as smart as I am, did not discover this until I had the upper trim (with the window locking/anti tow connections hanging off and my oh my, it's very different to the 2003 behind there.

The wiring is clipped into a separate housing which you have to un-click the lid of to peel it back to access the wiring clips, and basically I couldn't figure out how to unhook the clips, after ten minutes, I set it to one side trying to put at little pressure on the wiring as possible and started working on the ashtray & storage compartment, took the two screw out as in the video above and then could not get it loose for the life of me..

After some pushing and pulling I looked all around it and couldn't see what was connecting it (the storage compartment) to the ashtray.. so I gave it a pull and hey presto, it popped out.

I think you probably could do this without removing the radio, then the upper trims around it, but it's probably best to do it this way to avoid damaging any trim, it doesn't take much to get that done.

Apologies no pictures, after the disaster I had with trying to fix the central locking yesterday, my heart just wasn't in it.

It's super easy though if anyone wants help just hit this thread.

Cheers
