Hello my 98 slk 180k miles auto had recently began to make moderate clunk that appeared to be coming from almost right under the shifter ...however last week the moderate clunk became a very loud noise that increases upon accelaration when going 20mph also i noticed the noise is only when on the accelarator pedal and does not make noise when rolling...i local mechanic suggested rear transmission mount but i am thinking maybe front flex disc or the center support bearing

any help will be highly appreciated thanks in advanceF)

Welcome from New Hampshire, i would put money on the flex disc just because they dry rot over time. Of course the only way to know is to give it a good inspection.

This noise, is it a one time thunk when you start to accelerate, or is it a continuous thump, thump thump? The driveshaft will spin as fast as the engine in 5th (or 6th manual). is the thumping at that rate or slower? Clarify this and you'll probably get more answers.

If you can get the car on a lift put it in nutral you can spin the drive shaft and inspect the flex disc, front & rear.
