I've got a 1998 SLK 230 that has a supercharger clutch going bad. You can hear it rattle when you get around 2500 RPM. First question, can the clutch be repaired? If not, can I use some sheetmetal screws to "lock" the clutch so the SC runs all the time, until I can afford to replace it? I've attached a picture of the clutch, and you can see the plastic cover that is separating.
also, how much performance will be lost when the clutch fails?

Thanks!
Mike

You can replace the clutch, probably about 400 bucks if I recall correctly. I've heard that it's possible to do it on the vehicle but with the clearances, it's probably easier to remove the entire SC. You'll notice a performance loss if it fails completely but it would be mostly on moderate acceleration. I don't know if you can sheet metal it together though.
