Definitely!!! Either coastal or inland is fine with me. A Fri-Sun would be cool. Yosemite, meh, too many people. We went through there as part of last years's 4-day meet and it's beautiful for sure, but just too darn many other people. :D

The NorCal groups didn't join in on last year's inland drive at all, but perhaps we'll get better luck this year if we wanted to do something non-coastal. I could do the Monterrey thing again as well, but it gets a bit repetitive, although a spectacular drive obviously.

If everyone wanted to come up a little further to the Monterey Bay, Ginger and I would gladly host an evening Barbecue for our SLK family. We are a short 30 minute drive to Carmel, minutes to Santa Cruz, and lots of twisty, coastal mountain roads to drive!

Definitely interested on a Friday-to-Sunday type excursion. Thanks for bringing up this suggestion.

Don, that sounds like a really nice trip. The thing is, it is *REALLY* far away for those of us in the south. It would take me over 10 hours of non-stop driving just to get to Ft. Bragg from where I live (given infinite gas in the tank, and no food or bathroom breaks).

Personally, I would prefer to meet some place in between north and south. But I'm flexible if we can get a group together from down here for the Bragg thing.

Maybe if the So Cal group left on Friday stopped in the Santa Cruz/ San Jose overnight they could then meet up with Stinger or the Nor Cal Slk enthusiasts Motzkoman then Sac Valley Slks could meet SoCal and NorCal in Santa Rosa and then head over to the coast and then lunch at sea ranch and then head up to Ft Bragg. Also SLK NW has Dave54 from Oregon will be joining us possibly and we could invite Pam from the SLK NW group and any of her group. We have done this trip twice before and it is a great drive! I have all the restaurants nailed down as well as the beachcomber motel for lodging.

Cambria was beautiful and if that's what everyone wants I would go along. But, it would be fun to go someplace that has a little more "night life". Recalling Cambria from a few years ago, that place shuts down at like 7:00pm.

For SoCal folks, it's starting to look like a Friday through Monday deal, if we do the Fort Bragg event.

Friday, July 19: leave SoCal and stay near San Jose Area. I've stayed at Fairfield Inn, at San Carlos. It's next to the 101 with a steakhouse next door (for Friday Night dinner), and it's relatively uncrowded being next to a small local airfield (for small aircraft). This is roughly a 7 hour drive using 5 and 101 from Lake Forest, CA. We may be able to have lunch at the Coalinga,CA area (roughly 4 hrs from SoCal), then another 3 hours, more or less, to Santa Cruz, CA.

Saturday, July 20: Meet Sacramento and NorCal group at Santa Rosa (need to designate a meeting time and place in Santa Rosa) ~90 minute drive from San Carlos to Santa Rosa, then to Fort Bragg for lunch (breakfast included at Fairfield Inn, San Carlos, CA), follow Sacramento group's itinerary for the rest of Saturday. Stay at BeachComber motel in Fort Bragg, CA.

Sunday, July 21: follow Sacramento group's itinerary. Stay at BeachComber motel.

Monday, July 22: leave Fort Bragg to SoCal (9 hours w/o break) on highway 5 to Lake Forest,CA.

If the above scenario makes sense, we better start making hotel reservations. I think it is do-able.

What do you guys think?

It sounds cool. I just realized that it is one week before a scheduled euro-trip for me. But that doesn't mean I won't do it :D. Alright, pencil me in. Stinger might have some alternative ideas for staying the night in that area as well, perhaps camping in his yard? lol

hmmmmmm...........this is not a great weekend for me
I will leave for a buying trip in Chicago on 07/15 returning either late at night on 07/18 or early afternoon on 07/19. Because of this, I would try to schedule a late flight out of OHare on the 18th (good thing I haven't made the travel arrangements yet). However, I'm afraid that long out of the office will involve me working that week-end to get caught up. This time of the year is high season for us and it is very difficult to be away for an entire week. But, I could check with wifey and see how she feels about it cause I really wouldn't want to do this without her!

In either case, If SoCal gets involved San Carlos is just minutes from my office in Atherton and we could meet for dinner on the 19th. Or, of course (depending on how large/small the SoCal group is) you are welcome at our place. We have a 3 guest rooms, one with a king bed, one with a queen bed, another guest room with a single bed and a queen sofa sleeper (pretty comfy I am told) in my study. You guys could draw straws. :) . We could go out for dinner locally or just throw some ribs on the bbq and stay right here at the house.

For now, put me down as a "possible" for the entire trip.

Discussed this with wife last night and she is unsure. Any other recommendations or dates? If we cannot meet up with Sacramento group because of the very tight schedule, we could do a Friday-to-Sunday type thing on a different date between May and June (except June 21-23).

Updating list:

1. Durkatlon
2. etyu (unsure, will still make effort)
3. Stinger (possible)
4. PWSLK

Wifey says LETS GO! Now, just have to see how arrangements can be made on the business trip to see if it can be coordinated and worked ahead.

On a side note, when my wife was younger (in her teens) she used to live in one of the houses at the Cabrillo Light House about 10 minutes out of town (North of Mendecino). At that time it was still a working light house operated by the U.S. Coast Guard. Today the houses have been converted into a bed and breakfast. She has not been there in over 40 years.

I'm ready to do that, then if for some crazy reason the Chicago trip conflicts I can cancel, but I am sure I can work it out.

If you guys don't want to stay at the house (don't know what you're missing, best hotel in the bay area but I understand, and it will add a bit more drive the next morning) then we will stay at our place in Atherton that night. Seriously, we are only minutes from San Carlos. This way we can meet you guys for dinner, and the next morning it will be really easy to meet up with you for the drive to Mendocino.

If you want, I can make arrangements that night for dinner. Let me know what kind of food you guys feel like eating. Many, many, many places within a stone's throw to choose from.

I will make my reservations at the BeachComber tomorrow.....plus find a place for our dogs to stay as well :)

We appreciate the invitation very much. Wife is kinda on the shy side :) We can wait to hear from Durkatlon and PWSLK. There may be more SoCal folks that may join later. In which case, Friday night stay at a hotel/Inn may be more logical and not impose on anyone.

I will also look into making reservations at the BeachComber Motel in a day or two, and post here once it's done.

No problem Eddy, mine would most likely be the same way. In actuality, it will be more convenient to stay on the peninsula as it will trim the drive time to the final destination down by about 50 minutes.

Ginger and I will not be able to do the Monday portion of the trip. Therefore, I will make a reservation for Saturday only. We will take the drive on Sunday and then return home after the drive.
