Going Topless: One Woman’s Revealing Look at Car Shopping

Yes, we realize that this isn't about Mercedes, but we thought you may like to read about Amy Tokic's adventures in car shopping as she looks for her next car - a convertible - all on her own. It's an interesting look at buying a car as a single woman.
She took out four different convertibles - the Chevy Camaro, the Mini Cooper, The Mazda Miata and the VW Eos. If you want to read them from the beginning, you can find them here: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4 and Part 5.

Going Topless: One Woman’s Revealing Look at Car Shopping
By Amy Tokic
I’ve been the gal who has always driven the practical car. But with no kids, a small dog that rides shotgun and my current car on its last legs, there’s never been a better time to get the car of my dreams – a convertible .

I have never bought a car on my own before. The last time I bought a car was 12 years ago, when I drove away with a 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier, which was picked out by my dad (a GM retiree and the company’s #1 fan). At 300,000+ kms, one missing hubcap, two huge dents on either side of the car (it gives the car balance) and a hell of a lotta rust, it’s time to put the old girl out to pasture. Sure, it still runs (say what you will about American-made cars, this one gave me little hassle in all the years I drove it), but I’ve been a little embarrassed to have people see me driving it.

Even before I set foot in a dealership, I am finding it to be a pretty scary experience. Would I ask stupid questions? Would the salesman try to scam me as soon as I walked through the door? Would I forget the really important questions to ask? Can I do it alone?

I want to see if it could be done… rather, I want to see if I could do it on my own. Granted, I have the added perk of having a bevy of handsome, knowledgeable auto journalists a few feet away from me. But these guys are fanatics – once they start talking car shop, I’m in over my head about 10 seconds into the conversation. Plus, they’re all guys, so when it comes to knowing what it takes for a woman to get a fair shake at a dealership, I’d have to go it alone. I wanted to share my experiences with other women who were more than a little reluctant to go car shopping on their own. I guess you could compare it with going to a fancy-schmancy restaurant dateless – is everyone thinking that someone stood you up or do they feel sorry that you’re all alone in the car buying process?

I’ve heard the slack from all the convertible haters out there: It’s impractical. What will you drive in the winter? They just aren’t safe to drive. They’re easy to break into. You can’t wear a hat because it will fly off your head. But I’m a woman who knows what she wants, and ever since I saw Barbie in hers, I have coveted that incredibly sexy ride (without the pink paint job and useless Ken doll, of course).

The truth is, convertibles have come a long way baby. With the advent of the retractable hard-top, the convertible is harder to break into, is safer in a rollover and keeps you toasty warm in the winter. And because I have a larger-than-average head size, hats fit snug – there’s no chance of it blowing off when the top is down.

"Even before I set foot in a dealership, I am finding it to be a pretty scary experience."

This is a pretty scary statement if it at all reflects this womans' self-esteem. I guessed she was about 17 years old not the closer to 30 she must be. On second thought, I think most 17 year old women would not be "frightened" of purchasing a car.

Heck, I am scared to walk into a dealer, too......not about the same things, but rather that I will lose my temper with some know-nothing, lying, run-to-the manager, game-playing salesman. I may not be able to resist the temptation to turn him over my knee and spank the daylights out of him.....and I am a little, old fogey!

Such a salesman was the kicking off reason for my SLK purchase.

Amy, just remember the money is in your pocket and you don't have to part with it unless you are satisfied and happy!!!! To heck with it!

Rick

P.S. - There ARE some really good dealers out there, just find one

Luckily that is only 'one women's' experience. In this day and age, with the internet and the vast information we are able to grab hold of.. there is no reason for ANY purchase to be scary for any person! Its a buyers world.. the more educated one is, the better off they will be when buying any item.

25 years ago, you couldn't walk onto a lot without being accosted by 3 sales people
10 years ago, you were at least greeted on the lot, had small talk, then left alone
Today you'd be hard pressed to get any sales person to come out and greet you

I go car shopping and do lot research every year, either for myself or with my girlfriends or female family members. My father was a mechanic, so I'm not afraid of fast talking car salesmen. In general though, it is a male dominated field, that's just how it is. Times change, and women are realizing the more knowledge they arm themselves with, the better off they are.

Great post..thanks for the story.

...and now they're called stores and not dealerships.

I read recently where women are the largest growing market segment and designers are considering their inputs more and more. Who knows, the 173 may have a spot for that purse! wink

My Dad sold cars his whole life. He always engaged the customer, found out what he/she/they needed and tried to point them in the right direction. We need more sincerity and less hustle.
