2nd: Supercharged Lotus Elise (330+whp, 1900lbs, fully prepared for autox also)
3rd: Nissan GTR (Instructor driven)
4th: My SLK55.

Yeah...I've been away too long. I need to get a new helmet next year when the new safety standard takes effect and run Sunhilde through the cones. Years ago I won local SCCA class championships with the C230 and 190E 16v. Potentially stiff competition these days in C Stock, but since track tires are no longer allowed in stock the cost to run isn't as steep as when I had to have dedicated autocross rims.

Mark, I noticed that you left the gear stick in drive. Did you select a track mode for the transmission? We couldn't do that with the C230, of course, but I just put it in 2nd. It would upshift upon initial acceleration and just stay there. Very occasionally I would bounce it off the rev limiter, but most courses were tight enough that I never had the throttle pinned long enough to do that. Your AMG V8 might not even need second gear at all!

I'm wondering how hard this would be in a manual 6 spd, like the Dawg. (350 6spd). I've been looking for a helmet today!

It's easy. Just get a good launch in first, wind it up, shift to second, and leave it there. That's invariably what I did in my long lost 190E 2.3-16 or anything else with a stick. There's almost never a need to grab third, and on those few courses where I tried it I found that I was slower when I did. I got to the next course element that little bit faster with more speed, but had to scrub it off and downshift again and was usually still too fast and not perfectly set up for the next element after that. Better to feel it hit the rev limiter in second, back out just a smidge, and be ready to nail your braking point and turn-in rather than mess with grabbing another gear.

And unless you plan to run yet this year, wait until next year for your helmet. The new ones will meet new 2015 standards, and for SCCA that will last you ten years before it ages out and has to be replaced. You'll only get five years out of a 2014 model because of how SCCA regulates helmet standards.

I leave it in drive because there's no where else to put the knob! I do however "downshift" once to select 1st gear, that way it does not upshift except at redline. Then I let the car upshift at redline and downshift manually for corners. The short ratios in the 7spd mean I am often hitting 3rd gear on the longer straights, otherwise I'm mostly in 2nd gear.

6 speed manuals won't be any more difficult. The great majority of autocross cars have manual transmissions. Like Beekster said, most courses require a shift from 1st to 2nd and you can just stay in 2nd. Of course, that can change depending on the location and course layout.
