Space Saver Spare

The car I am picking up on Friday doesn't have a spare wheel. I'm not a great fan of the tyre repair kits as they can't repair side wall tears and other such things.

I've had a look on ebay and there are a number of space savers so my question is will a spare for a R170 or R171 fit the R172?

Space saver tyres need to be able to clear the brake callipers. They also require different length bolts to secure them. My advice would be to post your VIN so that members here can look up the correct part number for your specific car.

I just completed this project. R170 and R171 does not fit your car. I have slc43 and what fits my car, fits your car.. check my thread on slc forum. A brand new spare from Germany is about 300$ after discount same as you will get in Ebay used. You will need jack/handle, smaller lug nuts, wrench, little plastic thing to deflate the spare (after you have your wheel fixed), bag to hold the full size wheel (or your car will get real dirty), plus a tray to hold these parts. Reuse the air pump that comes with your car.

The real issue is how to carry the full size tire in your trunk. The trick is to remove the base bored that goes over the spare tire compartment and use that additional space. Your full size will fit at an angle. All this will set you back by $1K at least.

Let me know if you need help assembling he kit.

Mine came with a space saver and as stated it steel and a tire, but you do put air in after its removed from the trunk. It folds out/in as tire is pressure and de pressured. It will not go in the space with any air in it. It also uses the regular lug bolts from the wheel that you take off. I put it on once to ensure It would work.
