Hi Guys and Gals,
Has anyone complained to MB about the early year "flexible" roofs or know anyone that has had a result good or bad.
I have a 2012 SLK and the roof is flexible and today it let rain in!

After reading various posts on here, it seems the roof was changed to a glass roof in later models and some people had them retro-fitted.

I am thinking about complaining, but where to start - dealer or MB?

Thoughts please.

Cheers
James

Haven't had this issue myself but I think I would be inclined to register a complaint with MB UK first and keep an email trail and any reference they give you. They will most likely refer you to a dealer for diagnosis at your expense initially. This is a known issue where MB have previously set a precedent by both replacing plastic panels with glass under warranty and then a change of spec to glass panels in production.

I've got a 2012, and it came with the solid top...but shortly after I got it, it began whistling above 65-70. Found the rear edge had delaminated on the passenger side...the dealer took care of having MB replace it with the glass top upgrade...I understand this was a fairly common issue with these tops...best of luck to you
And hi from St Augustine FL have fun and enjoy the ride

I had the delamination problem with my top. Mercedes told me to pay for it myself. They refused any kind of goodwill adjustment. That is been my experience with Mercedes for everything with this car. My current repair bills are about $18,000 for the various issues I’ve had with this car. And that’s after less than 10,000 miles of driving on my part. 45,000 miles total at this point.

I had something similar when I purchased my 2012 SLK 250cdi back in 2014, it spent 3 months back and forth until finally they had the car and completely dismantled the roof and associated parts

I was informed that a fix had been done put making a seal inside the roof by taking a mould, and then reassembled, I never had the leak again in the 4 years of ownership

I was told by the tech that this was a technical fix they had done on a few cars

Just an idea you may want to ask the dealer about

So, its been into Mercedes today for an investigation at my expense.
It has de-laminated (thats what they call it) and I will need a new roof section plus seals at a total cost of £2830+VAT!!

They have said to complain to MB, but it is unlikely to get anywhere.
They have had 3 SLK's in this year with the same issue and MB have refused, even goodwill ..... thats a bit annoying TBF.

Anyway, before i embark on that potentially fruitless task, anybody got any good advice .....????

Cheers

If MB refuse take them to the Small Claims Court - cheap, fill in the forms in online. It can be handled by each side making 'postal' submissions - there is enough evidence on this forum let alone other fora to show that it is a known problem and that MB has normally paid for the replacement AND they stopped fitting the offending type of roof. If you do have to attend court then it is conducted around a table, very different from a formal court setting. If you win and they do not pay upgrade it to the High Court. If you lose the cost is very small,if you win whoopy.

You could also contact BBC1 Watchdog - yesterdays episode featured a number of makes that have been recalled and any remedial action takes a great deal of time. In some countries the models are banned from the roads until corrected. They showed a Land Rover model that has been recalled in places such as Australia, China etc but in the UK LR say 'no problem with the vehicle'

High Court enforcement of a successful claim - see BBC1 @ 11:45 showing High Court officials in action - amazing how many very large companies do not pay up until they are visited. They have the Law with them to make forced entry to commercial premises and if money is not forthcoming take items to sell at auction - they do all the work.

James, your poly carbonate roof is warped, which is a known issue. I had mine repaired at a local windscreen repair shop for about USD230. It has been perfect ever since. However, the removal of the roof is tedious. The original adhesive used is not strong enough to hold the roof.

They removed all old adhesive along the square roof frame as well as the inner side of the roof panel. Then, a new layer of adhesive is applied. They have to use strap bands to hold the roof and left it overnight.

Thanks for this.
So had my first batting back and forth between dealer and MB,the dealer has to support a claim, which they've now done.
So have to wait for MB now.

I'm going to secure a go pro on the windscreen so i can see the "rising of the roof" lol.

Now got water coming into the cabin - have i got a blocked duct?
