Quarter window seal replacement

Hello all... has anyone had success finding replacement quarter window seals for the R172? I'm talking about the vertical seal attached to the front edge of the quarter window, that seals between the quarter window and front, side window. Mine on the left side had partially slipped out of its channel, so I slipped it out and refitted it. However, I noticed a small chunk missing on the lower corner, so I thought I should replace it. The parts diagrams online only show the entire quarter window, so I went and checked with the dealer parts department, and sure enough, they say it's only available as part of the window. This is ridiculous. The rubber seal isn't even glued to the window; it slips into a channel, and is literally about a one minute job to replace. It's a rubber part! It isn't going to last forever. This is comparable to having to buy new wheels to get tires.

I've set up a search on eBay, and will watch for a used part, but thought I'd check in here as well to see if anyone knows if there's an aftermarket part available somewhere.

I think he means the leading edge on the window, Jeff.

Thanks guys. You are correct, it's the rubber leading edge that apparently only comes as part of item 10 in the diagram. This is completely nuts, $262 from Mercedes to buy the entire window for the easily replaceable rubber strip. There's a used window on eBay for $110, but even that's too much for the small part of it that I need.

My wife is in the market for a new SUV next summer. We like the GLC43, but I'm taking Mercedes off our short list because of crap like this.

Perhaps a universal-type window seal could work. Maybe look here:
https://www.carid.com/universal-wind...?vehicle=10122

Were you able to determine what caused the seal to pull out of its channel?

With the Smart Top module on its initial firmware, the windows up sequence was for the front window to go up, then the quarter window would close. At times this would cause the window seal to get pinched and roll over a little. I think this worked a small area of the seal out of its channel a little, but I didn't notice. I could roll the front window down slightly, then back up, and everything looked good. This didn't happen often, so I didn't try to dig into it further. With updated firmware, now both the front window and quarter window go up at the same time and come together more gently. However, now it started to consistently roll an area of the seal under a lot more than before, and I realized that it was out of the channel.

I think the seal is going to be good enough now that I can live with it. I'm still really disappointed with Mercedes parts support. I consider any rubber parts to be wear items that should be replaceable. I saw a post some time back that someone wanted to replace a seal on the roof due to a leak, and was told the seal wasn't available and the roof would have to be replaced to the tune of $10,000. My problem is small compared to that.

I think many would agree that MB policy on selling wearable items separately is more accommodating.

Unfortunately, they do not listen.
Probably as they expect all work to be in their own shop & can make a fortune on unnecessary parts.

Our cars are not sufficient sales volume to attract 3rd parties (when protection ends) to jump in.
Parts shared with other models are more likely to be available.

Perhaps, there is a soft top MB range with an identical part that is sold separately.
I doubt it for the rear window though.

I've got a similar issue where the leading edge rubber has a small tear in it. It's watertight (at the moment) but it's not looking good for the long term as it gets rolled every time I put the windows up.

.
Just seen this on UK Ebay for Ł35, but not any good for you if you're across the pond :-(

And with a deeper search, I just found one for Ł14, which I just bought for myself. I'll keep it until the rubber on mine eventually goes). So maybe keep faith with a USA Ebay search for one from a car breakers, patience may pay off!
