Panoramic roof headliner swap

A big box came today, with the label showing A1727900045 / 9H23 for a panoramic headliner in black.
The pictures show before and after on the roof, and the removed headliner, which shows where the clips are. Also, I've shown how you can peel back the original trim to make sure you can see through the roof before ordering the part - newer ones have been painted to prevent this.

Hope this helps someone in the future. It's a pretty easy job where you just gently pull off the old and press in the new.

Hi. Forgive the newbie question!

Does this kit mean that if you have a 'hidden' glass roof, you can buy this to replace your existing inner lining?

I've taken delivery of my 2013 SLK 250 TODAY. I knew it didn't have the 'optional extra' panoramic roof, but mine is certainly made of glass. This may just be an economic way to get the view.

Thanks for posting

Yep, littleghoti's post shows how to check the glass panel hasn't been nobbled by MB, but the model year of your car suggests that it'd be OK for you to do this mod.. unless the roof panel has already been replaced by for some reason.

This cheap upgrade is just one of the reasons I chose my particular car.

Much thanks for this. How cheap is 'cheap' ? Given that I have just spent the best part of *£loads of dosh*, not sure I could persuade 'er indoors to let me spend much more!

Sorry, by cheap I mean ****ing expensive for what it is (a piece of textured black plastic with a hole in the middle)... around the £190-£200 mark!

But it's a lot less than MB were charging for the pano roof option when specced on a new car!

Agreed that for what it is, it's a lot, but a drop in the ocean compared with what my new car cost, and I'm pretty sure that a new handbag will get me the Ok from SWMBO. Thanks

More thoughts

So, the fancy bit of plastic cost £190.08 to me, including delivery, and fitting was easy.

Driving along, it's quite easy to forget that the change was made, but it has made everything a bit lighter inside. There hasn't been too much sun to check out if it gets hot, but so far I have no regrets. There was one slight drawback that I came across the other day, where on crossing lanes, the divider reflected off the roof and out of the corner of me eye, there was some flashing.

The tint on the roof is a bit darker than I would have expected it to be as well.

Roof liner

I did this when we bought ours, we nearly did not buy the particular car until we found out that we could simply swap it out and have a see through roof!!!
It was news to the dealer, who now offers this optional service. If anyone wants a panel to block out the light i am sure we can come to an arrangement

An update- leaking water

So, it all seemed fine after fitting, but we've had some nice weather, followed by some nasty weather so after opening and shutting there is now a leak in my roof.

It is on the front seal, where the roof meets the windscreen - there is a gutter that looks like it should collect the water, but rather than draining down, it drops onto me and the seat - see attached photo.

My best guess is that something has fouled on the liner that stops the roof re-latching properly. I've removed and replaced the liner so hopefully that will stop it. I have stuck a bucket of water over it since, and it seems OK, but if anyone has any ideas or experience, then let me know,

Cheers!

Separate problem

I found some spare parts in the boot / trunk that looked unimportant, but had fallen off the roof when folding. It seems there are some parts on the B-pillar that locate and provide some thrust against the front seal. After screwing them back on the leak is gone!

David,

Welcome to SLKWorld.com: The #1 Mercedes-Benz SLK Forum from Valrico, Florida!

First please update your location and vehicle (year?: 1996-2017, model?: 32, 200, 230, 250, 280, 300,320,350,55) in your profile as it helps the members answer your questions which usually are based on that information if you haven’t. This takes about 30 seconds to do.
Follow exactly to update: ‘Usercp’ at the top of page, then ‘edit your details’ on the left side, ‘additional information’ near the bottom, edit your ‘location’ and ‘vehicle’. Info in your garage does not update your profile.

Your 1st thread should be your introduction so we can welcome you properly so post an introduction in the ‘New members introduce yourself here’ section, if you haven’t already. New Members Introduce Yourself Here - Mercedes Benz SLK Forum

Some tips to make your visit here more enjoyable:
If you haven’t, please use the 'search' feature at the top right of the page for your questions as they have probably been asked before. Remember, ‘Search’ is your friend.
If you wish to become PM (Private Message) capable or to ‘edit’, you need 15 posts. To get those 15 posts quickly, just go to the ‘New members introduce yourself here’ section and welcome enough new members to obtain your needed posts to PM. You can always pm a moderator.
Want to post a picture? Start a new thread or make a post, click ‘edit’, click on the ‘paper clip’ or ‘advanced’ and/or ‘manage attachments’ then ‘choose file’ then ‘upload’ and ‘submit’! If Iphone pics, you need to rename any additional pics as Iphone names its pics all the same, image.jpg.
Want to ‘like’ or thank’ someone’s comments? Use the ‘like’ button to the right or the ‘Thanks’ button, bottom right of any post you like. This saves you having to comment.
New members should be aware that the 'New Posts' link next to the 'Search' link top right of the info bar is a great way to see all of the posts you have missed since you were on the forum last. Remember to click 'mark forums read' under ‘quick links’ when you leave.
FREE!! Post your vin in the Vehicle Datacard Request section to get a free datacard (options on your car). You must update your profile with vehicle info and your location and post an introduction first.

Like my friend @Jules555, I fitted this option to my SLK. Got the part from my local MB Main Dealer. It took 3 days to arrive as it had to be ordered in. Once I had it, took less than 15 minutes to remove the old one and install the new one. This was the first mod I made (next came the Smart Top, but that's a different story).

I agree that when it isn't raining the top is down - but there are plenty of days here when that isn't an option. The open roof liner really makes a difference, making the car feel lighter inside. I imagine that if you have a dark interior (mine's cream), then the difference is even more marked.

My advice is to make sure that you seat all of the plastic lugs firmly and correctly. As another poster has said, if any of these lugs come loose, especially from near the front, then this could cause water to leak in.

Have fun!

Hi Guys...

2012-2014 SLK's have a glass roof that's mostly black, but with a lighter rectangle in the centre. I assume this marries up with the cutout section of the alternative inner liner.

My SLK is a 2015, but the glass roof in that is entirely black. I would like to get the 'free' pano roof by replacing the solid headliner for one with the cutout, but I'm wondering if there would be any point.

Do both models use exactly the same roof liner(s), and if so, do they attach in the same way?
With my roof seemingly black all over, if I swapped the headliner, would the cutout bit simply reveal a totally black section of glass?
Or is it perhaps not as black as it looks?
Is it the glass itself which is black, or is it essentially plain, but with some finish that could perhaps be removed? If so, how?

Nobody I've spoken to at MB so far seems to have an idea about any of this, and while the car's still under warranty, I'm reluctant to start pulling at the inner liner in case I break something.

Any help appreciated

There are other threads around at the moment concerning this, but I am fairly sure that by 2015 MB had started coating the inside of the roof to make it opaque. So as you said not a lot of point in swapping your roof liner.

I have a 2013 model and did do this mod to mine as I had the clear section in the roof.

I've just had my roof replaced a few days ago, and it is definitely a glass top now. I see in the OP that you can peel the headline back a bit to see if your top is clear. I don't have high hopes as it's new and probably blacked out. Hard to tell from the pic, but is it from the corner of the pillars where the top locks on to the front windshield?
