I understand that the risk is relatively low. But so, in my mind at least, is the risk of my having an accident serious enough to make airbag deployment beneficial given that I've been driving for 57 years with nothing more serious than a couple minor fender benders. OTOH, had an airbag deploy on a Jeep Cherokee of mine while someone else was driving it. Damage to front bumper was trivial enough that the airbag replacement was the most expensive part of the repair. Makes me wonder if there are any statistics showing the percentage of accidents where airbag deployment had no effect other than to increase cost of repairs.

For me, it's now a moot point. My SLK350 is too old to have the problem and I solved my GLK350 problem the expensive way by trading in my 2010 for a 2015 that doesn't have the Takata issue.

First please update your location and vehicle (Put Looking!)(year?: 1996-2018, model?: 32, 43, 200, 230, 250, 280, 300,320,350,55) in your profile as it helps the members answer your questions which usually are based on that information if you haven’t. This takes about 30 seconds to do.

Follow exactly to update: ‘Usercp’ at the top of page, then ‘edit your details’ on the left side, ‘additional information’ near the bottom, edit your ‘location’ and ‘vehicle’. Info in your garage does not update your profile.

Not the least bit surprised, the problem is Corporations have the same rights as a human being but no soul and no body to incarcerate, shareholders lost everything, and more important people have died and yet you won't see anyone go to prison at worst they'll lose a few of the millions they have gained all the while making an inferior and dangerous product and at some point they knew and said and did nothing and now due to the bankruptcy the replacement campaign may well be at risk along with people's lives. We need to consider some serious changes to the way corporations are governed and how people are held personally responsible for the decisions they make, it's been a well known fact for a long time that in some instances it's cheaper to break the law and pay the penalty than abide by the law and that promotes situations like this.

I work in the vehicle safety area in the U.S. With any safety equipment, you don't need it until you need it. Even if you think you are a perfect driver (never distracted!), what about the other drivers who may be distracted or impaired and crash into your vehicle? What if a spouse or child is driving your car? Takata failures are partuclarly gruesome, sending metal shrapnel into the driver/occupant, killing most. Nevertheless, airbags have been studied in great detail and they have been found to be highly cost-effective, saving thousands of lives every year. In some rare cases (like Takata), they can do more harm than good. But, overall, they are a very good thing.

If you want to learn more about the Takata recall, see https://www.nhtsa.gov/recall-spotlight/takata-air-bags . If you want to check to see whether there are open recalls on your vehicle (U.S. only), you can check by VIN at https://www.nhtsa.gov/recalls . If you have moved recently or recently purchased your vehicle, it might be a good idea to call Mercedes consumer support and make sure that they have your contact information.

It does seem like Mercedes is moving more slowly than other companies to correct this problem.

Takata Air Bag Recall Completed

Got a letter from MB a few days ago stating that they were ready to replace the drivers side air bag on our car (2008 SLK 350, priority group 4). Made an appointment for today and had it changed. Took about an hour.

The great news is that it looks like they replaced the whole assembly including the steering buttons and covers (including the horn cover) with new parts. As our button covers were a bit chewed up this was a pleasant surprise!

Yes had mine replaced today and was happy to see the buttons cover and horn cover were both replaced with all new parts. Like you my button covers had many scratches from 11 years use.

Urgent Safety Recall - 2469 - Driver Takata Airbag

Hi guys
I just received a mail from Mercedes Benz Australia that they are requesting me to arrange with their authorised dealer to replace my airbag ASAP.
Just wanted to inform you all so you can check yours.
You can check your VIN number on the following link.
https://recall.mercedes-benz.com.au/

I dont think this is only related to Australia or even MB SLK(s).
BT: Ive got a 2008 SLK 280.

I dont really want to contact the dealer as who knows what they do to your car other than fixing this issue.
But since according to MB AU this could lead to fatal injuries or even death I dont see any other choice.

Take care and lemme know if you are affected too.
Have a nice day
Armin

Air bag replacement

Just got back from the dealership where the airbag was replaced and was pleasantly surprised to find the steering wheel button covers and the centre cover were replaced. Judging by other posts, it must be a MB policy. Happy with the policy as I was thinking about having to repaint them as they had received a few scratches after 11 years of use. . Did have one problem with the dealership, but that can be the subject of another post.
