Difficult choice

I have the opportunity to purchase one of two R171. Your thoughts and reasoning would be real helpful. The decision on paper should be a no brainer...but is it. Here goes: Car 1 2004 350 upgraded wheels, sat nav. Air scarf full service history. Colour metallic silver grey interior. 6 owners. Mileage 57000. Cost Ł6990. ....Car 2 2009 (facelift model) 280 standard car. Air scarf. Full service history.Reversing aids. 6 cd radio. Colour metallic blue. Cream interior. 4 owners. Mileage 81000. Cost Ł6950. Both cars are in good condition. I like both cars. Your thoughts would be welcome. Thanks Roy

2009 is out of the balance shaft range and better conductor plate, so no worries plus no rust.

2004 ( i have a full option 2004 slk 350 ) a few spots of rust but that about it, so far mine has now 96.5 k miles.

I will go with 2009

Always difficult from a distance.

If engine size is not a primary concern I'd go 2009.

Yes, higher mileage, but SLKs like regular use.

Out of the BSI range.
More unique colour package.

Check out road tax costs. I suspect the 350 is lower.
Check out insurance.

The 350 seems over-priced to me...

Without any other information I'd go 2009 every day of the week.

Easy choice!

I'd go for the '09

The performance of my 280 is quite adequate.

Six owners on the 2004 would be a concern to me. That's a lot of owners deciding to get rid of the car - could be a problem they weren't willing to deal with!?

May I ask a supplementary question. A couple of people have mentioned in their kind replies an issue with Balance shaft Issue...Could anyone explain? To be honest I am favouring the blue 2009 year and it as been in the same ownership for the last three years with very little mileage put on it, I'd say about 9,000 miles over the three years. Obviously a second car which wasn't used much...or it was always in the garage for repair , seriously the full list of invoices and services are in order with very little by way of serious issues. Thanks again guys. oops and gals . Cheers Roy

Roy - I've sent you a PM. I think you will need a minimum of 15 posts to reply - but there's no hurry!

You are so right, stupidly I missed a digit. It should read 27294230987644 and yes it was registered April 2009

The data card says it was built in Bremen W/Germany and released on the 26th May 2008 and it was registered in the UK on the V5 document to the first owner on the 24th April 2009.

Also the data card states the engine number as 27294230987644 have I got a BSI engine?

Sorry for the confusion.

Thanks again Roy

No you do not have a bs engine
987644 is your last 6
the top range for bs was like 468993
replacement engine 31 was late 2007 and any 30 engine past 468993 is ok

Look on mot history to get a feel on how the car was maintained. Also if the service was done at the main dealer you can access the history online to check it.

The 280 seems a no brainer, 5 years younger, OK few more miles but the engines are good for a load more miles. Certain changes made to the facelift plus no balance shaft problems unless the 350 has documentation to show that the shaft has been changed.
