ABS Light... but strange symptoms
Hello, I was driving along the motorway yesterday in my 2004 SLK 350 and the ABS light randomly came on. Various malfunctions were reported, so BAS, ESP, ABS, tyre pressure monitoring all showing as defective.
When I restarted the car it had cleared. I notice the following when driving at speeds under 20mph. There's a strange mechanical noise from behind the dash and braking causes a grinding noise and a rough "bumpy" feeling through the pedal. The moment I go over 20mph the ABS light comes on, the weird dash noise stops and the brake pedal feels totally normal. The BAS, ESP and ABS defective malfunctions are reported once again. This is totally repeatable with every start of the car.
I have searched a lot about this and not found any post linking this dashboard noise and the brake pedal bumpy feeling with the rough noise (imagine that kind of grinding noise you get with rusty discs if the car hadn't been driven for weeks... the pedal sounds like that - until I go over 20mph).
I'm really hoping the link between the two will help identify the issue. Of course I can take it to a dealership, but I'm sure many here will appreciate, it's a 14 year old, very low cost car and I'm reluctant to go in without at least a bit of an idea of what I could be looking at.
Thankyou very much if you have read this much!!
Also, if anyone reading this is local, do you have any suggestions as to non dealerships that are good with SLKs?
