Unhappy SLK200 Kompressor R171 year 2005, Cam Shaft Magnets Oil leak

Hello,

I have noticed Oil leak around the Cam Shaft magnets (noticed by myself without having the engine light ON), where oil was also on the plastic connectors.

My mechanic unplugged the connectors, saying we need to change the magnets.

ques 1: do i have to change the whole magnet or just the O ring rubber seal (logically old seals cause leaks)
ques 2: after/if I change the magnets, should I also change the plastic connectors that have oil on them?
ques 3: If I do not change nothing, and just clean the connectors and keep them plugged, but i bring the cables up in a way to prevent a leak inside the harness which may result with the oil getting to the computer, would it solve the issue?
ques 4: Does oil leak inside the electrical cable itself? or it may just leak inside the outside black harness to get to the computer?

Thanks Guys

1-change the magnets
2-clean the plug with electrical contact cleaner

I had the same problem on my old slk r171 200 change the magnets and clean the plugs, i check it after a few km and no more oil inside the plug.
If you find a loooot of oil then it might end up to the ecu.

It can.
There is an oilstop adaptercable for the M271 and M111 to prevent oil from the camshaft magnets leaking into the ECU harness. Partnr A271150273365, € 35.

Thanks Sneaky Pete,

Ques 1: So let me get this straight, I just plug these from one side to the plastic plug and from the other side to the magnet (like an extension) ?

Ques 2: if I install these extensions, and i dont change the (mildly leaking) magnets, I can continue driving the car with no major problems?

Yes.

That's a tricky question. I have no idea what other problems a leaking magnet can cause, but as MB's solution is to provide an extension cable to stop the oil leaking into the ECU harness I'm inclined to say, yes.

Sneaky Pete this was helpful thanks!!

Anyone who knows the serial number of the Cam shaft Magnets in case I want to order them?? (I understood that the first serial was replaced by a newer one that solved the problem of oil leaking to the ECU?)

Do the magnets come with the O shape rubber seals ?? Or should I order those also (if so, what is the serial number plz) ?

Also, i am checking on ebay the magnets, is the M271 engine magnet same as for the W271 (which i think it is a C class engine) ?

Yes, C class engine is also M271. W is used as designation for the body type. W designates a sedan, ie. W203, S an estate or station wagon ie. S203 and R a convertible ie. R171.
Engine type is M or OM. M is gasoline engine,ie. M271, OM (from OelMotor) a diesel engine ie OM651.

Update: I have changed the magnets.

1-Odered original ones from the dealer cost 45€ each.
2-Had to order the O rings alone as they are not included with the magnets, cost 7€ each.
3-Had to also order the rubber plugs that block the whole in the middle of the magnet otherwise oil is gona come out from there. (Pictures attached).

PS. The Mechanic assured me that oil couldnt have leaked to the computer, as it would take a long time for it to migrate there, and it is not something to worry about, as on my last engine oil change this problem was not present.
