PSA for Garage Door REpeaters (unless I'm missing something)

Greetings:

We got us some shiny new doors for our three car garage. The previous doors were compatible with the Homelink in my SLK, but I was not able to program the Homelink to operate the new doors.

Read the manuals, and some links here and realized I would need a repeater. Fine.

So I got one. Problem is, it will only allow you to program one door. If I want to have all three buttons programmed to open all three doors (which is how it was working previously), it appears I would need three repeaters, which require three wall plugs and the need to securely store (and keep track of) the three remotes that come with the units. Too much hassle, i'll stick with the nice remote that came with the unit, which clips to the visor unobtrusively.

So, if you are interested in this solution, be aware of the limitations. Otherwise, please educate me as to how to make this thing work with three doors.

Thanks!

Jim

I'm not arguing just curious: what made you think you need a repeater? And what does the repeater do?

I' d like to know too. Never could get my car to open the door (assumed it was because the door unit itself was too old). And my ride is newer than yours.

just wanted to update this: I got my 2012 car "garage door opener on the rear view mirror" to open my vintage 1980 vintage Lynx garage door opener. Just persevered.

@LeonardoDaBenz, unless your garage door is more than 25 years old it should work. Rolling code receiver is been around for at least that long. If you want, for $30 (give or take) you could upgrade an old receiver to a rolling code receiver that will work. If you’re interested, I will dig one up for you.

I’m with Jim on this one. I had the same problem and choose the same solution. I can’t find the instructions, but I recall only getting it working with one door. I always park the SLK in the same spot, so I am fine with only being able to get one door open with the car remote.

My old garage door opener was installed new in 2001 and the new one was installed in 2017. Lightning took out the old one. The car remote absolutely would not work with the new door until the repeater was installed.

Here is mine with the remote sitting on top of the transmitter. The remote is only used for learning. The rest of the time it just sits there.

Instructions say that if you go through your vehicle's syncing procedure and it doesn't work, you need this repeater.

Best I can tell, LiftMaster/Chamberlain/Craftsmen went to something called "Security +" encryption between the remote and the door. Apparently the Homelink system in the R171 isn't compatible, and the repeater basically translates between the car and the garage door. Newer systems, like that in our 2013 Chevy Equinox use an updated system, and I was able to program that car to all three doors using the in-car system.

So you did try unsuccessfully to get the system to work with more than one door? Correct?

I'm in the same boat... I have a 3 bay garage, but wouldn't care if just one door could be opened using the homelink system. As mentioned, it will not program using following the instruction in the car's owners manual. I'm just using the remote that came with the opener (liftmaster 8600) and haven't decided if I want to buy a repeater. None of my other cars have homelink.

I have two 2-1/2 car garages with a single overhead door for each. Both my openers are Chamberlain and I use a Chamberlain repeater. The built-in opener in our 2005 works just fine opening both doors and I'm sure that if I had a third door to open it would work just fine.
