Balance Shaft Sprocket problems

It's been a long time, but I have a question about a potential purchase. Do the early SLK 280s have the same balance shaft problems as their "bigger" siblings. Thanks.

Potentially, yes -- depending on the engine serial number.

I think you're refering to the small displacement (3.8L) V8s in the W107 SLs circa 78. They eventually went to a dual sprocket set up.

I don't recall hearing any such problems with the V6 in any of the SLKs.

Who me? I just happen to know because our journey to the 171 started with "classic" fever. We came very close to buying a W107 with the 3.8L, so had read up on the marque. Much like the 05 oil consumption issue, most of those cars had already been modified (with the dual sprocket).

Der Flieger,
There definitely was an early range of M272 engines with soft balance shaft sprockets (and M113's with soft idle sprockets). See DTB S-B-03.30-08i.

On the M272, it's an engine-out repair.
