Navigation Laser Replacement (not straight ribbon)

I decided to tackle my navigation laser today. I read up on it and watched the great video that was posted. Of course, mine is different. Hopefully that means that mine is the cheap replacement though. I'm trying to identify the correct one to buy it off eBay. Any help would be appreciated.
The number is HPD 65A and here are a couple of pics along with one that seems to fit the bill. I know they can look the same, but be different. I don't want to end up with one that only works on the dash DVD player and not the nav unit.

@G0RSQ

I think you're up to speed on lasers, Peter?

I had exactly same experience as you!

Ready for the expensive laser, and found a HPD 65A inside, which is much cheaper. In fact the whole DVD deck is the same as in the NTG1 Head unit, just the pcb on it is different.

From my experience the HTG 65A is only available in one variant, so any claiming to be this are OK

I have bought on eBay these items without issues.

The Hong Kong one took ages to arrive, so happy to pay a little more for local supply and quick delivery.

When fitting, do not forget to remove the solder blobs on the ribbon (I forgot on both occasions I replaced mine!)

Perfect. Thank you. I ordered one and it's on the slow boat from China... I couldn't find a more local one and for $10 I figured I couldn't complain about the shipping time. I'll post once I get it back together. Thanks again.

I hate that... I left my Nav deck out while waiting for the new laser to arrive. I forgot you need to have all the fiber optics connected. What a poorly designed system that doesn't allow the HU to work if you don't have the DVD player plugged in. It made for a nice 2+ hr drive back to DC... The next few weeks will be pretty quiet in my car. Thankfully my smartphone and Pandora will help a little

I have used a short section of clear vinyl tubing with one of each fiber cables in each of ends. If need be use something to act as a splint so the two fiber cable ends are looking directly at each other and the light effectively passes between the two ends. If I remember correctly, the vinyl tube was an 1/8" inside diameter - maybe 3/16".

Do they just pull out of the connector? I have plenty of vacuum lines or heat shrink tubing I can use if that's the case. I was picturing a part that needed to plug into the harness.

The connector that the two fiber cables are held in will open/separate so the two cables can be removed. Keep the holder for future use. but with the cables out of it you can slide them into a suitable tube so that the two ends are facing each other. A small piece of elelctrical tape on each will keep the cables from slipping out of the tubing/holder.

As mchild says, the quick-and-dirty way:

and the "OEM" way:
https://www.amazon.com/Easyget-Optic.../dp/B01DZBMFBM

Personally I would spend 10 bucks for an adapter but both will do the trick.

Thanks. If I were leaving it I'd spend the $10 too, but I only need it to work until my new laser comes in. It would be there before I get home, so I might still do it anyway... Thanks for the heads up.

edit: Bah.... I ordered it. It'll probably be weeks before the laser gets to me.

After getting the laser off the slow boat from China, I'm glad to report all is right with the world again. So far so good. I installed the new laser and put everything back together. No hiccups with the navigation so far... The only thing I didn't like doing was using my soldering gun on the ribbon cable to get the solder blobs off. I went to school for electronics for a few years so I know my way around soldering. That was pretty sketchy. I was pretty concerned with melting the plastic, but it worked out though.

And.... I spoke too soon. I left the house last night to head back to D.C. After about 20 min I got the check navi disk message again. I swapped out the navi dvd for the factory one and it still had problems, but different. The whole Navi system started getting glitchy. I couldn't plug in my address 3 hours away. Navigation would freeze and reboot the whole head unit or just sit there frozen on one spot on the map. So much for my $10 fix.
I might try to get them to send me a new laser. It might be just a bad one, but I doubt it. It does act very differently than before though so I suppose it's possible.

What disk are you using?

If a copy, then it is possible it is "wearing" out (the dyes used in DVD-R can deteriorate over time in cheaper disks).

Do a copy to another DVD and see if that improves the reading (copying on a PC will correct the fading data).

I tried both. When I started seeing issues I put the factory one back in. The issues actually got worse.
