Battery dead but all is fine after charging again

I have had a strange thing with my battery. I used the car and 5 days later the battery was dead with only 3,5 volt!! I was very cold for the first time.
OK I thought charge and measure the current but only 0.2 amps in rest? 7 days after charging there still Is 12,4 volt on the poles. So now its fine. So I have no idea what happened. The battery (Bosch) looks shiny new but I have the car for 9 months so I don’t know about it.

What do you think happened?

But you do not know how old the battery is?

get a comprehensive test done on it or buy a new battery

Well, there will be a date code on it so have a look see. 5 days is too short a time for normal. Maybe some process is having an abnormal drain on it.

First thing though is to find that date code.
something like a circle sticker with 0814 or AU14
for August 2014

Yeah it is like something got stuck and kept using power and now is fine again. But to trust the car I like to know what happened. IF the battery is bad it would would die again in 5 days but it did not

you might have several good cells and one or more bad cells

get it tested

if you have no idea how old battery is

Well, if it went to 3.5 as you say it will not last. Best to get a new one and monitor it closely. Especially if there is a drain somewhere (and it was not the battery's "fault").

Severe drain may = damaged beyond repair.

As you have had the battery charged I guess that you removed it?
Water can gather in the battery holder.
This can cause electrical leaks and attack metalwork.

Charged it in the car. The batteryholder is clean, dry and waxed. I don’t think that is the issue. Now the car is mobile I can drive it out of the garage and take it out to find a production date.

We had the same thing happen to ours - Battery was so dead we couldn't even open the doors and because of lack of use of the spare key had mercedes road service open it up and jump start...
Never found the reason for this - some said it might be the light switch on auto so we set it to off if parked longer. Anyway - car never had the problem again and we never got a new battery. That was over 2 years ago

Thanks for the response. It must be something like that. I have the lightswitch on auto as well. Even though I have the daylight running set to on in the menu.

PS you know the metal part with the keyringholder in the key is the traditional mechanical key for the doors and the boot?

Yes, I was aware of it. Unfortunately we never used the spare key before so door lock was frozen up (key worked on the trunk but didn't help in this situation). Later on I took the lock out and got it to work again - now we check it every half year... lesson learned.

Time for an update. The dead battery issue hasn’t returned yet. Like I said the battery looked like new. I had an accident four months ago. The dealer organisation repaired it and I found out by looking at pictures of my hifi install (where the car had a MB battery) before that that they put in a new battery without telling (or charging it) me. So the issue happened with an almost new battery.

I have set my lightswitch from “automatic” to “off” because I have daylight running lights set to “yes” in the menu. The light are always on.

Good news..!!

Though this doesn't explain why the battery dropped to 3.5 volts...
But one thing to bear in mind, is it takes possible 20 hours of driving to fully charge a car battery, so just taking ones SLK out for a quick 30 minute spin now & again doesn't charge the battery as much as You think.

Hence why SLK's & especially R172's with Stop/Start that are not used as a "daily drive" should be hooked up to a CTEK charger, or similar on a regular bases

It happened again! The car was not used for 7 days and the battery only had 2,6 volt. While removing the minus of the battery I had put an amperemeter still connected to the minus clamp and minus pole the and reading showed that there was 0,02 amp flowing. That is not much and it should not drain the battery in a week. I left the headlamp switch to “off” since the last incident. I have switched daylight light running to on in the menu so I always have my lights on when driving the car.

Does anyone also have this issue? Al was well for more then 7 months!

Not my knowledge but from this type of thread.

Battery needs to be top condition and not just chargeable.

Check battery earth. Water can get into the bottom of the battery compartment.
There is a drainhole there that needs tlc now and then.

Is car charging battery when running?

You've eliminated auto lights, so what else might draw?

Alarm. (If alarm battery poor it will draw from main battery I think).
Is it the oem alarm? Some aftermarket ones cause issues like this.
Stereo can sometimes draw power after key removed.

Fans have sometimes been known to switch themselves on (forget why).
Check on your car whilst standing to see if aything is on.

For now, I would turn off sterio, COMAND, A/C, Heating, etc and see if it happens again.
Heated seats have been know to be faulty and draw.

A scan with a proper diagnostic MB kit 'might' show up the issue (it goes deeper than the stuff most of us buy).

Check battery earth. Water can get into the bottom of the battery compartment.
There is a drainhole there that needs tlc now and then. => THE COMPARTMENT IS SUPER CLEAN AND EVEN WAXED!

Is car charging battery when running?=> YES

You've eliminated auto lights, so what else might draw?

Alarm. (If alarm battery poor it will draw from main battery I think).
Is it the oem alarm? Some aftermarket ones cause issues like this.
Stereo can sometimes draw power after key removed. => PSSST DON’T TELL BUT I DON’T HAVE AN ALARM

Fans have sometimes been known to switch themselves on (forget why).
Check on your car whilst standing to see if aything is on. => POSSIBLE BUT THEY WOULD STOP WHEN UNDER 11 VOLT OR SO NO?

For now, I would turn off sterio, COMAND, A/C, Heating, etc and see if it happens again. => EVERYTHING WOULD BE OFF WHEN THE KEY IS REMOVED?
Heated seats have been know to be faulty and draw.=> ANYONE HAD THIS ISSUE AND HAD THAT AS A CAUSE?

A scan with a proper diagnostic MB kit 'might' show up the issue (it goes deeper than the stuff most of us buy).
=> I WILL CHECK WITH A CARSOFT i980 WHEN THE BATTERY IS FULLY CHARGED AGAIN. NOT THE REAL DEAL BUT A GOOD IDEA

I thought so, but I've read here that is not the case.
@frogfoot @Delucas @i860 @VII7 Some lines remain live with key removed don't they?

Heated seats have been know to be faulty and draw.=> ANYONE HAD THIS ISSUE AND HAD THAT AS A CAUSE?
I cannot point at the thread & may not be 171, but I suggest it as I have a vague memory of such.

Completely from left field.
Inspect the cabling that passes through the roof mechanism in the boot.
It can fray Can't remember symptoms.

I'll look for pic.

It can be many things but if I had to guess optical ring error that left those consumers running.
As you know you can turn on the radio on your MB without the key in the ignition, if the communication in the optical ring breaks down it will not turn off and drain the battery.
