SmartTop Firmware v3.52

It's here!

The latest firmware allows you to operate the rear quarter windows!!!

Looks like it was out on 8 May 2013.

http://www.mods4cars.com/m4cupdate/index.php#fw

The functional matrix shows Function #9, change it to 1 to operate the rear windows.

You will need to upgrade m4connect to version 1.10 (or 1.11) if you are using a Mac before you can update the firmware. I decided to leave the USB cable connected to the Smarttop and leave it dangling next to the driver seat for future updates (and using m4connect sure beats trying to configure the module by the steering buttons).

Now to the good stuff.

From the center console button, 2 quick taps will bring the windows up or down.

Enjoy!

2013-02-05 Major update: Rear windows can be raised with top down - v1.20

Has anyone tried this yet , with the windows up at high speeds ??
I'm a bit wary of this update , the other functions of the Smarttop are just changing the function of something already available , ie raise roof with one touch instead of holding down , but the rear windows never come up with the roof down and I'm wondering if Mercedes did this for a reason ???

IIRC DansSLK stated, on the R171, that the rear quarter windows were not designed to withstand high velocity wind buffeting (no specifics mentioned in terms of speed or mph). It may be OK if BOTH the main windows and the rear quarter windows are up while driving with the roof down.

Hopefully the software does not allow the rear quarter windows to be in the up position unless the main windows are also up, with a retracted roof.

Let us know how it goes (curious).

The rear windows will only stay up if the main windows are up. Once you lower the main windows, the rear windows will go down too.

Two taps of the center console button will bring the rear windows up or down, regardless of what speed you are driving. When the rear window is up, you can hit the driver or passenger window down, and the rear window will come down with the main window.

Now the wind. Driving with the all the windows up below 40 mph did not seem to make a difference at all (compared with the main up, rear down). At higher speeds, I seem to feel more wind at the top of my head, like the wind pulling my hair off my head. The sensation was different, I can't really explain it. In the end, I still preferred to have the rear windows down, it is probably something that I am used to having.

In conclusion, if the speed is less than 40 mph, then all windows up, there really is less draft, less noise from other cars, more music from your stereo. If the speed is more than 40 mph, then the choice is really up to you, I don't think it made much of a difference.

BTW, I have the OEM wind deflector. Maybe it would work better with the mesh deflector.

Updated the firmware 2 days ago.

I am not very keen on the looks/appearance with the main and rear quarter windows up and the roof retracted. The black rubber between the main and rear windows destroys the aesthetics.

Pictures, pretty please Eddy.... No one outside of those with the firmware upgrade has ever seen an SLK top down with all windows UP. Since I drive my car 95% top down, having the extra noise reduction in the cabin with all windows up at high speeds (I mean freeway speed :)) would be a nice "upgrade" for me.

BTW, I see a number of convertibles with rear windows UP on the road all the time.

EDIT: Appears the link to the firmware upgrade no longer works... Anyone have a different link that works? I want to do the upgrade as well.

SmartTop Mod

I did the mod last weekend. Not sure it it's supposed to work this way, when you lower the driver window, both rear windows go down. It feels weird opening the door with the rear window still up. Overall, I like the mod.

Did you download the application for Mac computers? M4Cconnect (or m4cconnect) stands for M4C (mods4 cars) connect.

Once this application is downloaded, open the application in your MacBook Pro or MacBookAir, then connect the SmartTop module via the USB cable.

The LED will be lit constantly. Note the top row of the m4cconnect window to see if it recognizes the smart top. The top row set of menus is almost intuitive.

Do check the Mods4cars website on how to do the firmware updates.

Hope the above steps are helpful.

Yep. Upgraded my firmware today & so 9 options now instead of 8. The extra option being the stated rear window raise.
So I set the option to raise the rears with a quick two push forward of the roof closure switch. Hey presto it worked.
Oh no I thought!
The previous owner had the side & rear windows tinted. However, the guy who did the job did the with the roof closed. Now there is a gap where the tint film finished & the original glass, due to the roof seal rubbers!!!
