R171 Service Schedule

Thought I'd have a go at reducing some of the confusion regarding the ASSYST PLUS service schedule for the R171 SLK.

If you haven't heard already, the 'A' to 'H' service indication system in the MFD has been replaced by alternating services 'A' (minor basic) and 'B' (major basic). These letters have nothing to do with the old 'A' to 'H' system, the primary purpose of which was to provide an indication of the amount of time the service would take, with 'A' being the shortest and 'H' the longest. In practical terms, any service from 'C' onwards in the old system would most likely represent a 'B' service in the new system along with various extra items.

In the new system, a service 'A' includes an oil and filter change as well as various instrument and fluid checks and is supposed to take around an hour. Service 'B' includes all items from service 'A' plus various other inspections including brakes, wheels/tyres, headlights, body and steering components and should take roughly two hours.

Now the disclaimer: the information provided is based on my Australian issue ASSYST PLUS service booklet dated 2004 as it applies to my pre-facelift SLK350, so your mileage may vary depending on country, model year and engine type.

The most sensible way (at least to me) to present the information is on a service year by year basis. I chose this as MB typically specify a minimum of annual servicing for the SLK in most markets. Some services/items are distance as well as time based - I have not noted the distinctions here in an attempt to keep things simple, but a rough rule of thumb for time/distance interchange is:

1 year = 12,500-13,000 miles = 20,000-25,000 kilometres

So here we go:

Year 1: Minor Basic service ('A')

Year 2: Major Basic service ('B')
+ brake fluid flush
+ combination filter

Year 3: Minor Basic service ('A')

Year 4: Major Basic service ('B')
+ brake fluid flush
+ combination filter
+ engine air filter
+ spark plugs

Year 5: Minor Basic service ('A')

Year 6: Major Basic service ('B')
+ brake fluid flush
+ combination filter

Year 7: Minor Basic service ('A')

Year 8: Major Basic service ('B')
+ brake fluid flush
+ combination filter
+ engine air filter
+ spark plugs

Year 9: Minor Basic service ('A')

Year 10: Major Basic service ('B')
+ brake fluid flush
+ combination filter

Year 11: Minor Basic service ('A')

Year 12: Major Basic service ('B')
+ brake fluid flush
+ combination filter
+ engine air filter
+ spark plugs

Year 13: Minor Basic service ('A')

Year 14: Major Basic service ('B')
+ brake fluid flush
+ combination filter

Year 15: Minor Basic service ('A')
+ Engine coolant flush
+ Fuel filter

Year 16: Major Basic service ('B')
+ brake fluid flush
+ combination filter
+ engine air filter
+ spark plugs

For those of us with the automatic transmission, there is also the requirement of a transmission fluid flush at 40,000 miles or 60,000 kilometres. The interesting thing is this is a once only service according to my booklet.

So there you have it. In summary, I think the key things to take away are services alternate between minor and major every year, with a bigger service every fourth year.

Gurus, please feel free to correct any misinformation in the above and hopefully after a bit of tidying up it might be 'sticky worthy'

Edit: The question was asked whether the R171 has a dust filter as a separate item to the combination filter. Although my service booklet does list them as two separate things, all the Googling I've done suggests there is no dust filter. As a result, I have removed the dust filter from the list of service items above. Happy to be corrected on this if someone has information to the contrary.

Cheers,
Brian

Dust Filter

Thanks for the work on pulling this together. Thanks goodness for this site as I wouldn't be able to afford to keep my Merc as a daily driver.

An example...

On my quote for part number MB-A1718300418 , The descriptor is Dust Filter (carbon) cost is AUD $247.74 including GST (sales tax).

Bought from Fletcher Jones Merc in Newport Beach LA as 'Ventilation' . Same part number for USD $69.44 .

From memory it is the cabin air filter.

Nice summary

But shouldn't we add "Replace Vario-Roof hydraulic cylinder seals" in there somewhere, to catch them before they dump oil onto the headliner or into the trunk?

It might be useful if people who have had leakage on their hydraulics post how many miles/years went by before they had the problem. We replaced 4 of the 5 on our R-170 starting at about the 7-8 year point and ~40,000 miles with one of the trunk lid ones, followed by the front roof latch cylinder bout a year later, then the two that lift the roof another year later, one of which was leaking, the other to avoid the labor cost of replacing it separately later.

It seems like there might be a sort of window of opportunity if you catch them before they cause damage to the headliner or trunk panels. Kind of like the "one time" replacement of the transmission oil at 40,000 miles.

I called the dealer a month ago asking for a service price. They told me that for pre-2007 vehicles it is once every two years or mileage. I drive it 2000 miles a year. I had it done last December, so therefore I didn't need it.

So they talked me out of getting a service done... !

Should change it when it starts to squeak or has lost its tension
What does your maintenance manual say?
Mine says at 100,000 miles or 10 years:
Check condition of poly-V-belt

as for other things, check your maint manual for mileage and time due items if you haven't

I just changed mine last night. My belt tensioner pully needed replaced as well as my idler pulley. The kit I bought had another pulley included that I replaced as well even though the old one seemed ok.

This is the kit I used. My car has 71,000 miles and this is the first time it was replaced. http://www.carid.com/2005-mercedes-s...-23202444.html

My booklet only says "check for cracks and wear at every service 2. Replace if necessary"

My belt seems to be fine, I just wonder if there's a recommended schedule.

Early r171 maintenance manuals did not cover some items. get a maintenance manual for a later year model and use that schedule or ask your indy or mb service for what they use.
As mentioned, the 09 covers it.

See my first post - the old system went from 'A' to 'H', with the letter giving a rough idea of the complexity of the service, so a D would involve more than a C which would be more than a B and so on.

On the automatic transmission it is R&R the filter and fluid every 40K miles.

Flush is the wrong word. You never flush anything on a car only drain. The maintenance manual says nothing about the torque converter which is a separate unit from the transmission, so I guess this is a lifetime fill.

Anyway, that's a good list to follow, and when you break it down like that, it is clear most owners could do their own service except maybe for the transmission. Some of those "inspections" may not be necessary, since cars have a bad habit of letting you know when they are unhappy!

What is interesting is how differently Mercedes dealers appear to operate across the world. And within each country. Clearly they're all there to make money, but some are far more aggressive than others.

I'm with Tony, I've found my dealer here in the the South West of England to be really good. I do keep them honest, by checking they keep to their promise of matching local merc independent garage prices and for tyres etc.

Apart from them being conveniently close, I appreciate the free Europe wide recovery service. I also believe I will get a higher asking price, if I'm ever mad enough to sell it.

But, I do admire the bravery and skill of the guys and girls on here, who tackle things themselves, some extremely complex, coz I ain't got it I'll keep to cleaning and 'fettling' (messing about with), although I am waiting for a delivery of detail products, to have a go at preparing and protecting the paint work myself.

Does this still apply to AMG models? I am (unfortunately) putting more miles on these days and breaking the schedule down by years doesn't seem like a good idea, for me. Do they have an average annual miles per year on this schedule? Thank you!
