Built-in Garage Opener - How To Program

Hey everyone,

I've had some issues the last few days on setting up our garage opener with a rolling code. I finally figured out what I did wrong. I skipped a few steps in the manual since I misunderstood the reason why you have to program the garage door opener with a remote for the garage first if you have a rolling code (if you don't do that you cannot train the receiver since the car will not transmit a frequency instead it'll be listening). So I thought I'd rewrite it in laymen terms in case anyone else was lost too for rolling codes or how to use it with a normal remote or don't have a manual.

Step 1: Switch on the ignition.

Step 2a (OPTIONAL): Reset all of the memory for the system to reset all previous settings. Hold the outside transmitter buttons (1 and 3) for approx 20 seconds but less than 30 seconds. (the indicator lamp will begin flashing and then you can let go -- around 20 seconds)
Step 2b (OPTIONAL): Reset a single channel by holding the desired channel you wish to reset for approx 20 seconds but less than 30 seconds. (the indicator lamp will begin flashing and then you can let go -- around 20 seconds)

Step 3: (do NOT skip! including for rolling codes) Grab the remote and get ready to click the remote button for the correct garage door and the button you want to program on the garage opener in the car. Now click and hold both buttons pressed down. After approximately 5 seconds the indicator light in the car starts blinking faster, then release both buttons.

Step 4: Click the button you just programmed in the car. If the indicator light is a steady light then chances are the garage just opened as you pressed it and it should work properly and you are done. However, if it flashes constantly this means you have a rolling code and then go on to step 5. (If you do not have a rolling code and it still doesn't work then skip to below step 6)

(the rest is only for rolling codes)

Step 5: Hit the training button on your garage door opener motor head unit. Then quickly return to the car (or ask the person who is helping you and is sitting in the car) and click the same button you programmed before for 2 seconds and release it. Then press this same button for 2 seconds again.

Step 6: Test the button -- now it should work .

In case you're having more issues (esp for Canada): If this still does not work then it could have gone wrong while programming the initial remote then hit the transmitter button in the car and hold this down until you're done. Then repeat the following until the indicator light flashes, hold down the button on the remote for 2 seconds, let go and press it for 2 seconds again. Then if it works (garage opens and your indicator light is not flashing when you hold it to open the garage) you don't have a rolling code and you're done. If now it finally learned your rolling code frequency (the indicator light now flashes when you hold the button) then go to step 5 and continue.

Personally I could only get channel 1 to work on my garage opener because I had programmed it with the remote before training my garage opener unit. I couldn't get the other channels to work because I never programmed them with the remote -- so do not forget that part if you have a rolling code .

Superb Post

This is an incredibly useful, very well-written post, and I feel sure that it applies to many vehicles of all brands with built-in GDO transmitters. I had been vexed by this for very problem for weeks.

From time to time, it becomes necessary to re-program a GDO system, and it is not at all obvious that in the case of a rolling code, one has to program the car with a known functional remote, even though it will fail to work, before proceeding to the next set of steps utilizing the training feature of the GDO.

Thanks again for the information - I doubt I would ever have figured this out.

The GDO buttons should be positioned past the SOS button, closer to the windshield.

Look up at the roof console at the base of the cockpit/cabin rear-view mirror, in the area between the 2 clear cockpit light diffusers, and immediately next to the SOS button (as boogie described) going towards the front windshield, you will see slim rectangular piece with a small central slit for the LED, and thereafter are three slender rectangular buttons labeled 1,2 and 3. This is the Garage Door Opener remote control or Home-Link buttons.

The GDO is usually part of premium package 1 in the U.S.

Trivial to retro-fit if you decide you want it!

It's a trivial retro-fit, you basically have to replace part of the overhead light console, $500 ish from the dealer, and I've got one new in the box sitting in Louisiana I spent $400usd on - I'd sell it for that plus shipping, or no shipping plus help fitting if you are in Vegas!

Only caveat is that I'm in London at the moment, and not back stateside till the 'Vegas trip end of September, so I'd have a hard time shipping it out before then.

Ooh, $400. Maybe a little too much. But I'll keep this in mind. Who knows, I may come across $400 lying around somewhere while your unit is still available.

Also, I won't be able to attend the Vegas meet this year. It looks like fun, though, but just too far for me.

It's been sitting on the shelf for a couple of months, and I'm not in any rush to clear up space yet! ;-)

You may need to clear the memory on the vehicle overhead console garage door HomeLink buttons.

According to the Owner's manual: press and hold the 2 outer transmitter buttons (buttons labeled 1 and 3) until the indicator LED lamp begins to flash, usually ~ 20 seconds (but less than 30 seconds).

After this then you can proceed "train" the specific transmitter button of choice by using the hand held remote (for garage door). You have to place this close to the overhead console HomeLink buttons, like 2-5 inches close.

I was unable to get the GDO to work in my '02 SLK 320 so a bought a key chain size (2"X1") garage door opener remote in a colour that matches my car. Very easy to program and only costs $30 CAN. It resides in my coin change compartment. This is available at most home hardware stores. Not as nice as the built in one but just as convenient and a lot cheaper.

Double thanks.. you just saved me tons of time, the manual just doesn't have it in order.. I spent 45min trying, guess that's what I get for not checking the forum first..

This is my problem, also. I've printed, studied and executed the excellent guide above and also watched the video a number of times. Even after resetting the unit (which seems to work fine), the car does not seem to "learn" the code from the legacy opener.

I've tried pressing them both together, and pressing each one first and then both in sequence. The indicator in the car never goes from slow blink to fast blink.

Wish I could make this work! Any ideas?
