Unhappy Hydro Pump Fluid Leak

Hey guys

I'm new here and I just got my first SLK 1999 about 2 weeks ago.

I was wondering if it is normal to leak hydro fluid when opening/closing the roof.

It leaks hydro fluid from the back left bumper (driver side) I'm guessing the drain hose? Anyways, if I don't operate the roof it does not leak any fluid.

Please help!

Thank you

No, it's not normal.

Someone with more knowledge than me will be along soon, I'm sure, to advise what / where to check.

Hope it doesn't turn out to take loads of time to repair.

Ok, thank you!

I hope so too.

Now that I know it's not normal, I'm actually quite surprised that the mechanics didn't check for leaks after they've replaced the hydro pump. That thing costs a fortune!

Welcome to SLKWorld.com: The #1 Mercedes-Benz SLK Forum from NE England (via West Sussex). Congratulations on your new SLK.

Your leak is more likely to be from the hydraulic cylinder that raises the boot lid than the hydraulic pump itself. There are a few posts on here about repairing them.

Here are just a few easy instructions to make your membership a fun and productive experience:

The "Search" feature at the top right of the page is for searching the forum. Many questions have already been asked and answered by our knowledgeable members.

If you are having difficulty finding a solution, you can post your question in the appropriate discussion forum. By doing this, you should receive a quicker response, but please be patient as the forum is worldwide and members live in different time zones.

Private Message (pm) is a tool to communicate with other members privately for instructions or just chatting. In order to do this you must have at least 15 posts. It's easy to obtain the posts by clicking on the "New Members Introduce Yourself Here" section and just welcome the new members (like we welcomed you).

To post a picture, either start a new thread or reply to one, type what you want to say and click on the 'paper clip' just above, this will open a window to your left, click on 'browse', go to your pictures, and double click on the one you want to post, click on 'upload' and then 'submit' your post.

If you like a comment or want to thank another member for their post, there's a 'like' button to the right and just below is the 'thanks' button.

As a new member you can use the "New Posts" link at the top of the info bar. It's a great way to see all of the posts you have missed since you were on the forum last.

When you are ready to leave the forum just click on "Quick Links" and click 'mark forums read', this will clear your screen for when you log on again.

As a member you have the privilege to vote and/or enter our Ride of the Month competition, we welcome new SLKs to compete and new members to vote:

No, it is not normal. You most likely have a leaky hydraulic top cylinder. You can search this forum for lots of information on their location(s) and repair. There are 5 cylinders and one pump along with safety switches involved when you raise and lower the top. The cylinders will all eventually leak.

Try this search:

roof cylinder leak

Dozens of results, all related to vario roof cylinder leaks, how to find them and how to repair.

If you've just had the pump replaced, take it back immediately and get the dealer to check their work and to replace anything that's been damaged by the hydraulic fluid, e.g. trunk/boot carpet.

If it's not related to the pump replacement, the cylinders do all end up leaking at some point. There are very cheap repair kits available. Don't let the dealer charge you $100s per cylinder for repair. Do them yourself.

Hope this helps.
