MB = Misery Benz

I am in an abusive relationship, so far it has lasted only five months. I love her but she just treats me so badly. One previous relationship, 43K and a full book of MB stamps in the service book and lots of bills.

She is fine with other men, Everyone who looks at her comments how lovely she looks, the specialist told me she drives like a new one.

It all started when she kept slamming the boot (trunk) lid on me and needed new struts. They were surprisingly cheap but getting them to compress for the first time before fitting nearly gave me a hernia.

Then she decided that she would spew oil from her camshaft magnet seal, down into the loom and into the O2 sensor. All was duly replaced but still threw codes, the ECU was splattered with oil. Fortunately this could be cleaned out and she returned to normal.

Then, the following week she started to rattle, on the overrun she would rattle like a pebble in a tin cup. The VVT actuator had gone. New sprocket and timing chain tensioner added, the original chain had no wear and was able to be used again.

New front discs and pads
Brake fluid
New spark plugs
Air filter
Mobil 1

Replaced nearside headlamp seal to stop condensation

A Transmission service and she snaps two bolts

Diff oil changed

four new tyres

All four Alloy wheels refurbished

At this point the moths left my wallet.

How does she repay all this love and attention, yes thats right, rattley supercharger. A new coupler imported from Jon Bond in the US. Fitted and she still sounds like a diesel.

A MB Remanufactured Super charger is ordered (Yes, they do one but its a secret) and duly fitted, peace at last.

So how does she repay me. . . . . . . as she leaves the specialist.

Empty coolant and a Dijon mustard spray job under the rocker cover.

Head gasket . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

I have arranged with my specialist and the MB parts desk at the dealership to be able to directly access my wages at source, rather than wasting all this time sending my money to my bank account first.

The mechanics at the specialist have suggested an exorcism, I have checked EIS/WIS but cannot find a code for it or a MB procedure. The specialist has suggested I contact the service desk at the Vatican.

Friends have suggest that I leave her, others have pointed out that I have changed so much of her, soon she will be a different car anyway.

The specialist has added me as a speed dial and has started to refer to the loan car as Jack's car. Is this a bad sign?

I think a few of us are in these abusive relationships but how can you leave someone you love so much. I feel your pain as I am still trying to pay off my credit card from various issues including power steering rack, broken intake manifold valve and all sorts of other nickel and dime maintenance since July. Now the oil consumption issue is hitting my wallet and I know its not going to be cheap but I am driving it till it breaks or until my credit card is paid off. I will at that time decide on new engine or engine rebuild. This car is much like another marriage (for better or worse) I still love it and of course I should expect it to drain my wallet!

She is currently sitting on the drive (don't know why they call it that, bit of an oxymoron as far as she is concerned) looking pretty but unable to go anywhere without a trailer.

Do you think we need a support group for counselling? I bet there's already a department at the back of the factory for it.

We will get all the support we can get until the wallets are bone dry and our credit is maxed. At least you know your car can't leave you when that happens On the flip side it will still be there begging you to spend the next cent you manage to get your hands on.

JackD, at least you still have your sense of humor, that tells me you do not want to leave her, but I do believe she's got a 'thing' going with your tech. I vote for counseling, it's expensive but well worth it!

This is what you do..

You march right out there and you set her straight. You tell her you can have a pretty 2014 BMW [horror and shreiking as I typed it] in the driveway by supper if she doesn't STRAIGHTEN HER $HIT OUT immediately!

That should do it.. slk's are like dogs.. if you don't train them well from the start they walk all over you! [I feel your pain and so does my wallet my friend ]

I have just been checking a book on psychological disorders, here's what it said:

"SLK (Seriously Lucdicrous Kommitment) Syndrome: An ability to over Kommit to a disasterous one way relationship".

Apparantly in medical circles it's just referred to as R170. . . . . . .

Ahhh, isn't that a woman for you.

"She is fine with other men, Everyone who looks at her comments how lovely she looks, the specialist told me she drives like a new one."

Aren't we all suckers for the good looking ones?

"It all started when she kept slamming the boot (trunk) lid on me ... They were surprisingly cheap but getting them to compress for the first time before fitting nearly gave me a hernia."

Can't stand it when my lady gets a bug up her arse and starts slamming doors. As far as the hernia.....we shouldn't be carrying them over the threshold at our age.

"Then she decided that she would spew....."

Yep, had many a woman that could spew out obscenities like a truck driver, especially when mad. Just play it cool and it usually doesn't last too long.

"Then, the following week she started to rattle...."

When they're happy, they can rattle on forever. Consider your self fortunate that they are not rattleing during a football game.

"New front discs and pads....."

A sign of the time. You can pick up bigger and better front pads very easily at the local plastic surgeon. And believe me, whether they say it or not, THEY ALL WANT THEM.

"Brake fluid...."

A Latte at Starbucks, not too expensive.

"New spark plugs"

Diamond earings are one thing, but piercing the belly button must really hurt.

"Air filter"

Nothing like a cigarette after making whoopie!

"Mobil 1"
Massage oil is nice too!

"Replaced nearside headlamp seal to stop condensation...."

Not unusal for them to cry when they don't get their way.

"A Transmission service and she snaps two bolts "

If you think that's bad, wait until she snaps a finger nail.

"Diff oil changed"

Usually makes no difference at all.

"four new tyres "

You got off cheap. My lady has a whole closet of ONLY SHOES!

"All four Alloy wheels refurbished"

Cheaper than buying new.

"At this point the moths left my wallet. "

I know, if it's not dinner and a movie, it's always something else.

"How does she repay all this love and attention, yes thats right, rattley supercharger.... "

But she still LOOKS BEAUTIFUL, as said before, the rattling on will never stop.

"So how does she repay me. . . . . . . as she leaves the specialist.
Empty coolant and a Dijon mustard spray job under the rocker cover"

At least she can cook. A little Dijon adds flavor to everything!

"Head gasket . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . "

Have it snipped and you won't have to worry about the gasket ever again!

"I have arranged with my specialist and the MB parts desk at the dealership to be able to directly access my wages at source, rather than wasting all this time sending my money to my bank account first. "

Welcome to marriage.

"The mechanics at the specialist have suggested an exorcism... "

Try counseling first. Hopefully it will help.

"Friends have suggest that I leave her, others have pointed out that I have changed so much of her, soon she will be a different car anyway."

My wedding song was by Billy Joel......"I love you just the way you are".

"The specialist has added me as a speed dial and has started to refer to the loan car as Jack's car. Is this a bad sign?"

Yes, but be careful. She will accuse you of cheating on her!

That was funny to read bad sad to hear. Indeed SLKs are like women - they need attention. Most of the problems are really common and seems like every member had them in the past. But you sound very optimistic!

My advice would be to get her running and sell her fast. There are SLK's out there that will treat you like gold. I have two 2006's, a 350 and a 55 amg. They are both great cars. I do admit however, I had to replace the front fender light bulb and the interior cabin filter on my amg.

I have no tolerance for abusive behavior. Kick that ----- to the curb and find a good one.

Hi JFR she has now done a staggering 53k and I have done 10k of that in the last few months. The car was immaculate when I got her but she has two parking dings now and some stone chips, but I drive her everyday, so that's to be expected. The interior is perfect the roof stays in the balance position for about twenty minutes with the engine switched off.

I think most of my cars problems have been that it has not really been driven. It probably went to the gym, the nail shop (is that what you call it chick?), the mall and back home again. Where as I have been getting in and doing 600 miles a weekend. Despite all the problems I had with mine the R170 SLK is a good car and I'm well impressed with mine (usually for all the wrong reasons ).

The boys here always say 'these cars are meant to be driven'. So I think you are correct. The more you drive and shake the dust loose, the more she will come around. People think that getting a lower mileage vehicle is better than the higher mileage one. I don't believe that to be true for one moment. Part of the advantages of the higher mileage vehicles is that the cars have already gone through some of these repairs-and the previous owner in order to continue driving had to address [most if not all] the issues at the time. So just keep driving her, it will all sort itself out.

I agree that lower mileage is not always better even if people pay a premium for that lower mileage. The assumption is there should be less wear and tear but I think people still have to consider that sitting parked can create just as much damage though the paint and interior should be in better condition than one that has been driven. I prefer buying new cars but I really wanted the r171 and it had to be a manual. I rescued this SLK which the previous owner did not appreciate as much as they should have. I think as long as people consider that there will be a higher cost of maintenance on a used car versus new, then mileage becomes less of an issue. On the flip side buying older cars generally we pay cash which leaves us without the headache of car payments which also leaves more room in our budgets for upgrades and maintenance. Once all the trouble is sorted and with proper care people look at them as if they are new anyway.
