Fault code -311 on my 2000 slk230

Fault code -311 is showing on the instrument cluster when started. The engine idles very nicely but when the throttle is applied engine bogs down and nearly dies. I have the maf out for cleaning and I inspected the k40, it appears to be ok. Don't want to pull the trigger on a new k40 until I know what the -311 code means.

You might want to post an introduction in the ‘New members introduce yourself here’ section, if you haven’t already.

Some tips to make your visit here more enjoyable:

Thanks for the info, I also found another misfire thread and it was due to bad gas, this is a possibility cause the car has been sitting for 2 years. I'll put new fuel in tomorrow and then go from there. If the fuel is bad I imagine I would be getting multiple misfires. Thanks for your help

You should also consider putting a fuel additive in it:

Welcome to the forum.
It is not a fault code showing on the instrument cluster, the -311 means you car is overdue for a service.
download a owners manual (for free) here http://www.mbusa.com/mercedes/servic...owners_manuals it will answer this question & many more.

Ok I feel a little silly but I'm learning. I cleared the dash, scanned the obd2,here are the code: 300, 303,304, 100, 110.
I have cleaned the maf (probably needs replacement)
New spark plugs
New air filter
Before I spend 200 on a maf I was wondering if there could be any other culprit
Could it be a vacuum hose, Pcv, or oil separator?
I'm no mechanic, but I can turn a wrench, so with the help of you kind folk, I might be able to get this thing running.
Thanks for your help

Check your crank-case hoses for any leaks or splits. The codes 0300-303 and 304 are those current or stored?

It is possible that your MAF has gone bad, however I am surprised that it is just a 0100 without a 0170, 0171, 0172 code to go with it. That is usually what happens when the MAF goes bad, the fuel bank can't keep the fuel balance in check and the car runs too lean or too rich. Could just be a short in the wire and thus still working often enough to throw a bank fault code.

What did you clean the MAF with? MAF cleaner, Carburetor cleaner, something else?

Are you aware that you can test a MAF with a voltmeter or a multimeter?

How many times have you driven the car since you pulled the codes? How many miles have you driven since the plugs have been changed and the MAF has been cleaned?

Mine took almost 100 miles before the engine light went off. Unfortunately, it came back on and the MAF had gone bad. Also, I have read that the car must be "driven" for at least 3 drive cycles before the engine light will clear itself. To jump start the process, crank your car. Let it run for 1 minute 30 seconds. Turn off car for 5 minutes and crank and run again. 3rd time, actually drive it.

If you will give us some more details we can help you sort it out or at least feel more confident that it is a bad MAF. Did you post how many miles are on the car? If not, that info is good for us to have as well.

That is NOT to throw a bank fault code
