Depo Tail Lights Bulb Error

Hi Guys,

I had been getting an intermittent bulb out warning for my tail lights, so I decided to spring for the DEPO LED Tail-Lights. I installed them quickly and easily, I checked the light's and they work great, but I am getting the bulb out error on my dash, both for when I use the brakes or when I turn on the tail lights, so the error is coming from both "bulbs". None of the other installs I saw indicated this would be an issue with the R170.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Martin

You said you were getting an error before you changed the bulbs. Could this be the same error?

No...

The bulb error before was intermittent, it had to do with the socket for the passenger side brake light - the socket port was broken and sometimes it would slide out of the way and cause the error.

The current error happens instantly, as soon as i turn the car on.

Sounds like the LEDs do not load the circuit enough for the computer to recognize that there is a load. So it thinks that there's a burned-out bulb. Are these error-free LED?

Resolved.

These are "error free". I just fixed it. The other installation guide (the lights doe not come with instructions) forgot to mention something.

There are two resistors in the packaging, they are fairly well hidden, they connect to two sets of green and white wires on each light, one hooks up to the brake light LED, the other to the Tail Light LED. One resistor is heavier than the other. The heavier one goes on the brake light, the lighter one on the tail-light.

I will try to add this to the DIY thread.

Like I said, the LEDs by themselves did not provide a big enough load. The resistors trick the computer into thinking you have a regular lightbulb.

Yes

Thank you very much for the pointer, it put me in the right track. Ransacked the packaging and found what I was looking for. I had assumed the resistors were built in to the housing.

Can't believe you're out working in this rain. I guess you're just down the road from me. I will be driving up with royalpar in October to the meet. You want to drive up with us?

I installed the smoked LED DEPO tail lights on mine. They actually came with directions and clearly showed where the resistors get wired. They look and work great!

Meet?

Where's the meet occurring? Let me know the details and dates and I'll check it out.

Yes, I started the work this morning and it was sunny, but right when I started the driver's side, it began pouring. Love south Florida. Once it lightened up I wrapped everything up. Easy Peasy.

@Bassman - I agree. They look FAR better than the OEM. Not changing my headlights though, I have the factory Xenon, I'd like the lens to be clear but no aftermarket is going to top the Xenons...

I may get the depo bumper LEDs though, but it says they are white?

The meet is October 11, 12 and 13. A lot of people are staying three days, but everybody will be there on the 12th.

I realize I am reviving an old thread but am unsure how to proceed on installing my DEPO taillights. Here is my question: What do I connect the "fake bulb connector" ends to? They don't have the same keying as the original brake lights so I am hesitant to just plug those in. Sorry if this seems like an obvious question, just don't want to short something out. Thx.

Update: Disregard. There was a wrong bulb (with not aligned pins) in one of the original spots that threw me off. All hooked up and working great now.
